Crack and Bang!

Hi Folks,

Could do with a few ideas to be honest. Cracking drive out yesterday (just a gentle tootle out). Doing a steady 70 on the A50 when there was a massive "Crack" and I felt something like it had dropped off the car and gone underneath (felt it through the seat) didn't see anything behind me, Nothing after that so I thought I must have ran over something.

Took the car out today but after a few minutes brought her back home, some cracking coming from the rear. Jacked her up and ran in 1st, 2nd and 3rd up on axle stands. Ok in 1st & 2nd but cracking in 3rd, sounds coming from wheel rather than prop or diff.

Has anyone else had anything similar??

Just to add, no movement in the wheels like a wheel bearing etc.

Yes I had the same thing yesterday on the A1, turns out in my case to be rear wheel bearing gone u/s

Probably seized from the lack of use ..

Could be a leak from the water injection

Well bearing was new ,just incorrectly fitted !! Grrrr, got through some water / maths yesterday due to a lot of booting it as it hasn't been out for 9 months !

Could well be a CV joint - the cages separating the balls in the joints are not unknown to fail. Top marks for running it up on axle stands; that always scares the bejasus out of me!

Thanks for the replies, yeah running it up on the axle stands is a bit of an arse twitcher lol. I Made sure the front wheels were well chocked and that I was ready on the brake pedal. I will have to have a look at the weekend, are the CV joints an easy job, I have done them on a few front wheel drive cars but never on a TVR.

Also, are the UJ's on the prop a thing that goes often? The prop flailing around has always worried me a tad.

Forgot to say that it's a 93 400 with a Rover box and GKN (Quaife) diff. Well looked after but has done approx 75,000.

No, mines starmist chianti Deep metallic plum colour. Not seen many in Stoke to be honest.

When I had similar thing happen on my car it turned out to be the crank pulley bolt that had sheared off and bounced under the car. It went on to drive a fair few km before the pulley itself came off the remainder of the bolt and make a much bigger noise....

ouch that must have hurt.

Check the bolts that attach the UJs to the back of the stub axle. I lost 1 last year, didn't half make a noise!!

Hi again folks,

Thought I would work my way from outside in, to see what I found. The problem so far would appear to be the wheel bearing, it seems to have gone "kaboom". Ive never actually seen one go like this before without warning but you live and learn.

Maybe it was the light! There can not be many k reg chimaeras round our way. I'm the S reg starmist blue knocking about ;-)
