For sometime now I've been considering coil packs and a new ecu,
I keep hearing of a chap called Jools,,, I actually met him at last years Griff growl,
What ecu does he prefer to work with,,, at the end of the day I want someone who can map the car too!
So what's the best Ecu options and why?
Thanks Alun

Joolz/s is from Kits and Classics Chesterfield and will do you Emerald I think as his preference. Or Omex, MBU. But won't map Megasquirt. I've heard nothing but good things about him.

Or if you went Megasquirt you can get Shaun from MS2 tuning to come and do it. He's mapped mine today and he's a great guy. Or there are placed you can take it for mapping like Dale at Bailey performance (heard really good things about him and he's about £250 for the day i think, map on the dyno)

I went Megasquirt because Daz was selling one cheap smile
Works fine for my needs plus I want to start learning how to map it properly myself and it's easy to work with, thousands other users online for help/advise etc.

At the risk of being provocative, ask yourself seriously what you want to achieve. If you need full 3D fuel mappability, then great, fill your boots - any of the usual suspects will do it more than adequately.

If your beef is really with the ignition side, then it's perfectly possible to go to coil packs and a mappable ignition module without needing to rip out the OEM ecu. The 14 CUX is now do-able by a number of third parties and is still a very capable fuel management solution if in good fettle. So why ditch? Getting rid of the dizzy on a serp (especially) is a no-brainer.

Don't under-estimate the work involved in replacing the whole lot; it is quite do-able and satisfying but never going to be a plug and play replacement.

By the way, I'm on Emerald K3 and it's been flawless and very very configurable (unlike my grasp of how best to drive it).

Alun, talk to Jools about Pupp's proposal. He can remap the 14CUX. And it's straight up the M1 from you.

Though having just read that post, you may have to join the queue behind me......woohoo

I want to move away from the Lucus, stepper, disi, AFM simply to get better reliability and to be able to map it. Get rid of lean running at high revs for example,
Arrr, thanks boys I've now got an idea who works on what,,,
I do like the idea of learning to map it myself,,,,
Cheers

The Emerald K6 seems to be the one,, anyone had it fitted by Joolz, I do see he re maps the MBE system too.
Maybe I should ask if anyone has had issues with any of these systems, wiring etc.
Thanks lads it's all become much clearer,
Hi Brett, how's the car,,, by the looks of your rather nice Y piece it just fine!

Mmm, 5 min thinking about it has me convinced to get away from disi!

I'm going to call Joolz, when everyone gets up!
Thanks again gents and any comments are very welcome, real life experience etc.
cheers Al

I have a nice, flexible, grunty engine, but I have felt for the last two years that there is probably another 20-30 bhp and torques lurking in there. Discussions I have had in the past have suggested that better spark control could release that extra without vast expense, particularly if any required modifications to the 14CUX could be made quite simply.
However, I will have to think long and hard about it, as I don't want to change things and wish I hadn't.

Eric van Spelde / speed Eight performance got 300 bhp from his 4.3 (special build) with the use of 123tune dizzy and 14cux. The 123 replaces the normal dizzy and is programmable. He used a bigger afm and injectors too.

I presently have 300 bhp from a V8D 5 litre with a torquey cam, with bigger injectors and AFM. Interesting.

I have a very similar engine spec to you and have 325bhp, so there must be more lurking there smile

My old 5.0, stage 4 heads, ported inlet, 45mm trumpets, Austec tweaked 14CUX, standard injectors, adjustable regulator etc.

Running 32 degrees advance then broke 2 pistons on a very hot day at Shakey frown

Before and after was standard Y piece and then main cat out.

Well I'll be! smile
Surely a new ecu will unleash a few horses on it's own,
This and outriggers are the last big jobs to do before I'm happy with the car ,, after that it'll be just chasing a few ponies here and there, oh and big brakes,,, oh and,,,,,,

Just received a very informative email from Joolz. Excellent.
He will want my car for upto two weeks, it seems like lots of money but going into the future it must be the way forward.
