Hello all,
Since buying my Chim back in March I've probably done around 2000 miles so it's not exactly sat in the garage gathering dust. There were a few things I wanted to do to it including clutch as it was extremely heavy and riding high, precats out and fit my Y piece.
Long story short I managed to snap the lower rearmost RH bank manifold bolt trying to remove them, with 3 others refusing to budge at that point I decided to take the engine out instead, with a view to cleaning the chassis up, a head refresh and possibly a new cam and chain etc.
I ended up cutting the heads off of the other three manifold bolts, two of which came out nicely with a bit of heat and a stud extractor. The other two however are well and truly stuck solid. I've reluctantly tried welding nuts on and using that to extract them but all it's done is make the problem worse by them snapping off flush.
To add insult to injury I thought maybe I could just remove the head and send it away to my local engine specialists. How hard can that be? Evidently my engine was built by He Man as I've managed to shatter 3 sockets trying to get the head bolts undone, and worse still rounded one off. Right now I'm not a happy man! Haha. Pictures to follow

I had a similar issue with mine, I ended up drilling a couple of manifold bolts. One could be saved but the other had to be helicoiled.

Cheers the replies chaps, I bought myself a few goodies today preparing to do battle against them including a nice set of new cobalt drill bits. Also got some Irwin 'Bolt Grips' which managed to extract my rounded head bolts no problem at all, fantastic tool and highly recommended!

I destroyed 3 sockets (side wall split) taking the heads off my V8S.
I bought an impact socket and 1m breaker bar - they came off easily with that. If you crack them all off except the rounded off one then torque them all up again a fraction over normal torque it may help get the rounded one out.
A metal chisel trying to turn the head at its edge would be my first try.

That's exactly what happened here too, I work on plant machinery on a daily basis so I'm fairly used to things being a mission to get undone but this was on a new level! I even split a proper 6 sided impact socket trying at it. In the end I bought some new 6 sided sockets and used a 1/2 to 3/4 drive adapter, coupled with a big T bar and piece of tube. No joke I had to put all my strength in to get them to crack off.

On the plus side the engine looks fantastically clean inside. All bores still have hone marks visible, no detectable bore lip, valves have more or less no pitting. Not bad for a 72k car.

Apologies for the multiple posts. Computer is down and I'm stuck on my phone which isn't very photobucket friendly

Is it possible to use studs. I am going through this at the moment. Had to take the engine out after snapping a couple of bolts.

Maybe just for the bottom if you slot the manifold bolt holes

It's okay Barrie I feel your pain haha.
I'm sure you can use studs for the bottom and slot it but in all honesty I think I'm going to put stainless replacements back in with a thin smear of copper grease and see how I go with that.
Need to buy myself a DTI gauge so I can have a look at what sort of cam lift I'm getting as that could be well worth doing whilst it's out.
