I sold a TVR Chimeara 11 weeks ago, still waiting for 4 months tax refund.
I sold a Trafic Van 7 weeks ago, still waiting for 11 months tax refund.
I have chased both with DVLA 3 times, the second time being told a cheque was being issued for the TVR that day and the Trafic Van refund would be given priority as there was no excuse for not being refunded.
Yesterday was the 3rd attempt, when I was told no action had yet been taken to refund me for either vehicle, the guy then said if he contacts the refund dept again they push the refund request to the bottom of their list as they treat it like a new enquiry?
Now having a new tax system in place that is just an excuse to rob motorists by charging 2 months tax for the month a vehicle is sold is one thing, but not having the staff to sort out the tax refund mess is a joke.

You forgot to mention once its sold ,it may be sitting on the road without tax ,forcing the buyer to Tax the vehicle before moving it .
This means most purchases will result in the DVLA receiving two months tax in the one month .
I can`t understand why we can`t tax it on a day seeing with don`t have the disc anymore . We pay most things any part of the month these days .
You could bill them for being late just like we get charged being late .

Regarding asking why it can't be taxed on the day, yes it could be but you missed the point, this is a stealth tax on the motorists netting DVLA millions extra each year.
It is a scam but one month's VED is lost (due to overlap) and the cost of that shared between vendor and buyer. DVLA wont be in a hurry to correct this to days from whole months because yes, tens of millions are being scooped up on this.
Best plan is to sell a car at months end, buyer taxes next day in new month. Could be flawed logic.

Legally the new buyer should not even drive car home without taxing it for the month even if it's the last day, as far as DVLA are concerned you must tax vehicle online or over the phone before you can legally drive it away as the new owner.
So the new owner has 3 choices, tax it, tow it... or take a chance.
The new system is simply a stealth tax on motorist, DVLA are not coping with the problems and it can take weeks to receive refunds due a crap system and poor understaffed customer support.

My thinking is that DVLA don't immediately class the car as untaxed, but await receipt of the V5 in the post before altering the cars status, so it should still be in the databases as taxed, so not pinging up on ANPR cameras. Last car I bought was 150 miles away so drove it home as it had nearly 2 months tax on it.
I got done for speeding on a backroad duel carriegeway which would normally be 60 or 70 mph, but I was doing 62 in a 50mph limit.
No logic for the reduced 50mph limit, good road and not a built up area, which is why the police hide there with a hand held gun.
My concern was not the speeding fine but if the car would show as being untaxed, but it didn't.
So my conclusion was there is no problem with taking the chance and driving new purchase home, but doesn't this just prove how rediculous the new system is?
If you can`t pay on any day of the month why can`t the road tax which the seller has paid for until the end of the month stay with the car?
Seeing the seller has paid for "that period" that would be the way it should be done .

No reason why the tax could not run until end of that month, but that is exactly the point, the new system is not about fairness it's about raising more tax from the motorist, estimated at £45 million more for DVLA
I sold a motor bike last month, got the tax back in about 4 weeks. There must have been issues with the OP.
Guy who bought it rode it home on the 29th May. By the time DVLA processed the paperwork, it was the next month. I got refunded the whole months because it goes by the date of sale.
I don't think its worth getting so steamed about. How often does the average person actually buy or sell a vehicle? Most of them are £30 p.a. now or less as well so it's pennies.

Most people need the car straight away so they will end up paying for the month ,meaning the DVLA have managed two months tax in one single month .Guy who bought it rode it home on the 29th May. Well they've given away some of the registration transfer charges income since the admin is now mostly electronic or on line. £25 p.a. retention fee? Scrapped. £25 to add or change a nominee for a registration number? Scrapped. (It all changed in March 2015)Removing a number plate from a car is now a flat £80 with retention and / or nominee for 10 years.

I'm well aware of that but as the poster who got done for speeding shows, the DVLA database isn't updated until they get the V5c. They're not psychic. I'd have no qualms buying a taxed vehicle and going home in it. BUT, if it's SORN either in a private sale or at a dealer, you'll need to tax ut straight away because any scan of the plate would show this.ianwayne said:

12 weeks waiting for TVR refund which I think is about £270 pa?
8 weeks waiting for Trafic van refund which again is about £270 pa?
I own 3 other cars, two are £270 pa and one is £500 pa.
