De Greasing Chassis

Hi Chaps
As the engine is out now I'm going to clean up & paint the chassis in the engine bay. Just wondering about what to use to de grease the chassis before grinding the flakey bits off... any experiences.

On mine I used White Spirit, brushes and rags.

I used thinners to clean up mine, then 1200 grit sandpaper to give the surface a key

Paint it on with a cheap paint brush (get a few packs of brushes from Poundland), leave for 10 mins and then wipe off with rags and re-apply as necessary. It cuts through layers of waxoil no problem. Once done, use xylene thinners to thoroughly clean the paintwork (available at Toolstation: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Painting+%26+Decor...

Job done. Trust me, it works very well and worth the money. No sanding or heavy duty scraping etc.

Use gloves, goggles and a mask etc.

All depends what you are going to use to paint your chassis, white spirit is good for getting remainder of waxoyl off when you have scraped all the st off. But it leaves a residue which can affect any paint/coating you are going to apply.

Gallon of petrol paint brush and a few rags will get most crap/oil off.

I use panel cleaner user for cleaning car paint, great for getting of grease and leaves no residue when it flashes off

Id go with the panel wipe too if the grime isnt too bad.

Just about any solvent will do it

Thanks guys. It's quite thick in places. Will roll it out over some old carpet & plastic sheet & have a go the weekend. Will be using the wire brush attachment on the grinder to clean it, then some Rust Eater etc.

Finish off with some thinners to thoroughly degrease, prep and paint.
