Hi chaps,,, the pics you see above are my steering rack,,
Some say you can replace oil seal with rack in situ,,,
Any tiny bits of crud fall in there you've fooooked your rack,

I removed my steering rack from the car,
Clean everything
Remove dusk cap, some racks I've seen don't have the dust cap,,, ?
Remove internal circlip with correct pliers
Remove shim,,,it's very thin so be careful not to distort it
You'll now see the brown oil seal, prise out but making sure your tools do not touch any of the faces the seal sits on or upto.

Buy new seal from local supplier,,, fitting is just reversing the list above.

That pic shows the numbers on the seal,,
That seal has sealing rings on both outer and inner so you need the same type. Couple of quid,,

Removing rack,
There must be some good threads so search for them
Mainly before removing rack, centre steering g wheel straight and make marks on the steering column UJ's ( to line them up when re fitting on the steering arm.)

I'm super busy at the mo so try and find a rack removal thread and go from there.

THe trick is to clean all around that area and remove the complete pinion housing from the rack assy (3 bolts) because there is another seal below that one that also needs changing for a long lasting repair biggrin be sure to use a flange sealer where the pinion meets the rack housing on refit and some non permanent thread lock on the bolts

Thanks guys and especially al. Will look up how to remove the rack but think I'll get it rebuilt by a specialist in the winter when I won't be using the car so much. Thanks very much for your knowledge tho its very helpful.

As Sardonicus rightly points out, you should actually replace the seal inside the rack,,,,
Mmmm, mine only started leaking after I'd pulled and fought getting the steering shaft off the splines when removing the rack for cleaning,,,
I had a very slight weep after about a weeks driving,, so removed rack ( again yikes and made the repair to the outer seal only,,,,,
If the oil has reached the top seal it stands to reason that the lower seal is failing,
Since I replaced my upper seal it's not leaked,,,,yet,,,,,

Def better to get it fully serviced really,,,, you don't want to be taking it out to often ? wink

Easiest way to remove rack.

Remove Y piece.
Disconnect hoses and column shaft.
Pull back gathers from the rack.
Unscrew track rods from the rack, (32mm spanner iirc).
Unbolt and lift rack straight out of the engine compartment.

Saves all that grief in wiggling it through the wheel arch and only about an hours work if you are all tooled up!
