Loud knocking noise

Started up my 1995 4l Chim. yesterday after a layup of 4 months, I let it run until the fans clicked in and on my return there was a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. I switched it off and allowed it to cool and tried again and same result. Switched it off and checked the oil which was low. Might this be serious or is the car thirsty for some oil, I have it booked in for a service at the end of next week but I was thinking that if I topped it up would it be ok until then. By the way there was no noise before it was stored away, any thoughts?
Another question, my garage man needs to know what type of filters does he need for oil, fuel and air as they are not listed in his book?

Was the oil pressure OK after you started it the first time? Is it still OK now?
If so, I wouldn't expect the low oil level to make much difference. (But shame on you for starting after a four month hibernation without checking all the fluids.)
It's possible you've got a sticky lifter or something of that sort causing intermittant noises. It's also possible that the oil has drained away from somewhere important (the cam, for example) and lack of oil pressure or a delay in coming up to pressure has damaged something.
Best case it is just a blowing exhaust manifold gasket - they can sounds very mechanical sometimes.

If so, would you not be better taking your Chim to someone who knows TVR's i.e. Torque Flight in Ballygowan ??
I would not entrust the servicing of such weapons with a local 'garage man' unless he has had prior experience with the marque.
The guys in the club over here would not trust anyone else, just ask ColinL

Whilst trying to find the cause of my non starting Griff, i turnrd it over and over on the starter, only. When i tracked the cause, and started up,it had a lifter knocking, took ages to "pump up". Maybe leaving it just ticking over(low oil pressure) was the same. Mine is fine again now, so fingers crossed !
