Had my car serviced 1000 miles ago now and since then ive had a fair bit of tappet noise, It was fine before the service so im thinking it must be down the grade of oil, Looking through the history it's had 10/40 most of its life.
Before I go for a cam and tappet change I thought I'd try something bit more cost effect first. If it works.
Im going to service the car again myself and try a different grade oil.
Ive been reading through so many different posts ive given myself an headache.
Fist of I thought of using a thicker oil like 20/60 but then I read some posts that thicker or would make tappet noise worse.
I thought thicker oil would buffer the sound better?
Then I read another thread where it said thinner oil would flow through the tappets quicker and improve it.
Confuse to fk now what you think?

I think you might be looking in entirely the wrong place. hehe

Tappety noise is often leaking exhaust manifold gaskets. Do you know how to check them?

For what it costs you may as well drain the oil and refill with something like valvoline racing 20 50 or Penrite Hpr 15.
The 10 40 although ok isn't ideal for the older engine.

Its not the manifold gaskets.
I was going to try millers 20/60 until I read thinker oil would only make it worse?
Would it be worth using an engine flush first? 20/50 is the same weight as Halfords classic car oil dident think that would be up to the job?

Is the noise constant and at any revs,,, or more when shutting off and as the engine revs down?

If you do have noise any experiment is better than non,, 20/50 sounds like the right way to go, originally these engines would run on that oil so it's worth a try,, your original thoughts of a thicker oil to ease the noise is a good one to my mind!

Can someone else confirm if slight lifter noise on run down is a normal characteristic or a noisy follower full stop!

I'd imagine if your having noise then you may have worn cam, lifters, which then has a knock on effect to the pushrods to tappet causing the tappet to also wear, hense the noise,
I really hope it's just cam but my tappets were very worn and they had to be replaced!

I'm sure you know this already and it's probably less severe than the picture I just painted,,

I also would not run my engine on 10/40,, and synthetic can be suspect In these engines too so I've been told?

I've been using the Penrite. All is well. Classic oils do some good offers,

Its quite loud more noticeable when the engine hot.
You can here them tapping away if im sat at traffic lights or driving at low revs through town for example.

I use Millers CSS 20w/60 (in the summer) in my supercharged 450 as it is recommended for the higher engine load. I would suggest a slightly lighter oil for general N/A use. If you like Millers they have replaced their Competition 15w/50 with a 20w/50 NT (nano technology ?!) which is supposed to be very good but must be run up to 100 degrees C on first use to release the nanos !!!??? apparently.

oil pressure on both oils fine and hold the temps very well.

Gone for valvoline vr1 20/50 couldn't get any 20/60.
So hopefully it's going to do some good.
Is it worth using an engine flush first?
Always thought they could do more harm than good on an older engine?

Bit of an update changed the oil today for 20/50 didn't bother with a flush.
Started it up and the dreaded tick was still there.
Not as loud but still a little peed off so jumped in and give it brisk run driven in anger you may call it.
Came back and the engine is sounding just as nice as it was before I had it serviced at the TVR garage.
Even though it puts a stamp in the book I think the moral of the story is do it yourself and you know what you're getting.

So you're sorted then, cool.
