Starter Motor dead when hot

My chimaera does not start when hot I have fitted the modwise relay kit so now its time for a new starter, is it a easy DIY or should I just pay to have it fitted, been quoted approx £200 for new starter and fitting.

Sounds like the common problem of heat soak from the manifolds cooking the starter.
I had the same problem a couple of years ago, its starts fine when cold, but will let you down for a few minutes after stopping when hot.eg after filling at fuel station, an embarrising wait before it cools enough to turn over.
I removed my starter and stripped it apart and completely degreased it as well as the solonoid, and wrapped it in some heat shield material I purchased from a motorfactors. and it has been fine ever since.
It maybe worth a try before you fork out for a new starter.

That is not a bad price for a new one fitted!

You would need at least axles stands, some good leverage and sockets etc.

If it's a newun, at £200 fitted I'd just get on with it. The bit you'd save by doing it yourself ain't worth the knuckle skinning!

Hang on a minute,

If you’ve got David’s kit fitted, check the feed into the new relay, you can use the LED.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the META immobiliser relay that was cooking and not the starter. Moving the immobiliser sorted it.

Another check is to get under the car when hot and not starting, then with care short the solenoid to the starter motor power cable, if it turns over your starter is fine.

Does'nt the immobiliser also start the fuel pump as that is working fine, it is just the starter not turning, checked the wiring on the modwise kit all seems OK, have booked it in at Offords on Thursday I will ask them to double check that it is the starter.

The original META system immobiliser has three separate circuits with an on board relay for each, one for the starter, one for the fuel pump and I forget what the third one is.

So yes, your fuel pump could still be running, been there.
