Hi All,
I'm a bit out of touch with the latest situation on this topic.
It used to be see MA for a remap or replace the whole system with GEMS or Megasquirt.

Unfortunately, whilst I would love to do it myself, I don't have time anymore, so I am looking for someone to improve the running of my Chimaera, mainly the shunting and low-throttle running issues. It starts and runs reliably but has always felt like it could be improved / smoother.

I have manually set and disconnected the stepper motor and that has improved the over-run shunting a bit but with colder weather approaching, I am going to have reconnect it, albeit with the washers mod recommended by Blitz.

So what are the options please. Who can do what these days for reasonable money.

Thanks.

As far as keeping the original Lucas system goes Mark Adams is still in the game and a thoroughly decent chap, there's also Jules at Kits & Classics who is also rated highly. However depending on what your future plans are with your car, you may be better investing your money in an aftermarket system such as Megasquirt, Emerald, Canems or MBE.

As we speak my car is at Powers Performance in Coventry having the MBE System installed to my 4.6
There is a thread but I seem to talk more about my new bike!

Full wiring harness, including the 7ft long starter cable, coil packs and disi less ignition advance and retard. Bespoke map for my engine,
If all goes well I'll be collecting my car this Saturday so I'll do a write up once I've got a feel for all the new bits and pieces.
I've already had the heart transplant as in engine re built
Now I'll have a new brain and sensors to keep it all in check, reliable data and a temp I believe in !
It's all very positive stuff and if your cars a keeper and you aim to use it regularly then this is the right route to take, especially if like me fuelling/ ignition faults are something your keen to eliminate from your Tvr then this is the sort of Ecu you should be looking at.

I took my Sc 4ltr Chim to lloydspecialistdevelopments for the Canems ecu upgrade 340cc injectors decated
New loom fitted runs like a dream now with none of the above problems I did have before
I drove it to the Spa classic this year 900 miles never missed a beat
This is what the car puts out now on the rollers .

Car is a keeper and a daily driver so I am initially interested in driveability, no shunting, smooth over run and better manners in traffic so I don't wear my clutch cylinders out !

If it has potential for future expansion / upgrade of the system to allow for power upgrades, then that would be a bonus.

The MBE is supposed to be all those things, I'll just have to wait a few more days to find out smile

Another vote here for Lloyd Specialist Developments and the Canems engine management system.

In the TVR world the Canems system is now a well proven drive in drive out package with fantastic continued support if you need it.

You will get a TVR that runs infinitely better, it will be more economical and have better throttle response too.

You will be deleting the ancient crispy old Range Rover engine loom in favor of something much neater and more reliable.

Then, when you want to modify for more power all the doors are open to you, unlike the 14CUX where things can get complicated, expensive and frustrating as you'll inevitably be trying to track down the Scarlet Pimpernel himself "AKA Mark Adams".

Sounds interesting. What do you get exactly with Canems then and what does it cost for the conversion ?
I presume Rovergauge isn't going to be any use after the conversion, which is a shame as I like playing with that.
Can you get a similar or better piece of software that can talk to the Canems system from your laptop ?

If your one for messing then you will be able to access and see everything thats going on inside your aftermarket ecu from your laptop. And change things if you wish.

If you arent going to do the conversion yourself. Choose / Find your chosen installer and go with their preferred option. I have Emerald and its so user friendly. From what i`ve seen Canems looks equally easy to navigate your way around it.

Forget Rovegauge, once you enter the amazing world of after market engine management you will instantly enjoy a far superior two way interface with the ECU.

And unlike Rovergauge and the 14CUX you will actually be able to do something more than just look at the pretty graphics.

You'll be able to tweak the fuel & spark tables, the idle, manage your rad fan start & stop temps, and ultimately alter engine's entire characteristics to your liking.

And really that's just the beginning, you can have two maps, run different fuel types, and safely go forced induction should you wish wink

Essentially going after market ECU is like opening up the biggest box of toys you could ever wish for, it will also immediately expose the old Lucas system as the redundant dinosaur it is

Do it!.. thumbup

...add me to the CANEMS / Lloyds camp on engine management.

They made a lovely job of mine (I think I had mine done before COG) and it was the best money I spent on it!

The boys @ Lloyds did my 400 upgrade to CANEMS. Great install very knowledgeable friendly folk. The car is now super smooth, responsive and reliable. If you like to play the software is very comprehensive. Good value for money and plenty of options.

Good luck.

Sorry for ignorance but what is COG ?

Regarding two fuel maps, is it just a switch under the dash or something to switch over ? That would be cool - go with super smooth running and economy under normal conditions but then I might want to switch over to err "performance" if there was a clear road !

You can do that with one map though ...

More usefully maybe one map for everyday use and one map for getting through an MOT (although you can do that on one map too) ...

also down with the Lloyds boys. did my chimaera and the T350.
at low speeds the chim was shunting badly and could not live with
it anymore so gave it a go. it has improved a lot but keep in mind
putting a hot cam in an engine will ever be a hot cam and you have to live
with some downsides. besides that work has been done nicely and when you
ever have a question give them a ring.

just as a small hint if you do the conversion get an idle valve
and a wideband lambda connected to the ecu.

I decided an economy map was a bit pointless, by nature your trying to run as lean as possible with an economy map possibly inducing higher combustion chamber temps, not a great idea in an already hot engine.
One map fuelling the engine correctly at all rev ranges then driven with a light foot should give equally good fuel return figures,

I had originally presumed that I would have 'economy' and 'power' maps but the point of the '3D' maps is that they allow you to map dependent on manifold air pressure (load) and engine speed and so you can do a single map that covers being efficient at low engine loads as well as power at high throttle openings.

Which is presumably what my map must achieve.
One thing I don't get, Dom has been upgrading the Ecu on tonnes of the later 6 pot engined cars for years and everyone seems happy with MBE
Why have so many guys gone for other ecu's that are not type approved. Not many people seem to know much about the MBE, it's always last on the list when people talk about Ecu upgrades, it's the same price as the others, the loom is bespoke, you can buy and fit yourself if you wish,
Is it because some of the other ecu's have great internet back up on how to use the systems and guidance on home mapping etc,

I'm only 12 hours into having my MBE install at Powers,,,, I'm bound to be pleased( biased maybe) but Dom and Jay know a thing or two, they are using a proven product, they know it inside out, they have a regular rolling road, ask them and they'll show you the mapping,
They've tuned thousands of Tvr's,,,,
Why go anywhere else,,,
I'm aware the system fitted to chimpongas car can run duel fuel etc but other than that are there other differences between say Emerald and MBE when it comes to playing with their parameters
Thanks in advance Alun
