Help cannot start

Have a 96 4lit HC. Last few start ups the car a bit rough but yeaterday sounded although firing on maybe 3 cylinders then wouldnt start at all. Re charged battery still wont start. Can here fuel pump. Starter ok. Can smell petrol. but wont fire up.
What should I try next?
Took it out a few days ago and it suddenly died but only for a millisecond. Did not think anything of it but maybe coil? I am waiting for my bible to arrive so any help appreciated.

Check to see if the coil is leaking ... giveaway sign that it is knackered is that there will be oil inside the ht lead seal

Ignition Amp ??

Check if you have a spark on the king lead and also on a couple of the plug leads. That would confirm once and for all whether you have an ignition problem. If no spark (sounds quite likely) then you need to work back through the low tension side, or get somebody to do it for you.

Thanks your suggestions. Replaced coil as seemed likely offender but still wont start even though there is a spark albeit not very strong. Plugs are wet and slightly dirty but look ok so there must be fuel going in! What does the ignition amplifier do and where is it?
