Chimaera Brake Problem

I've now looked at my front brakes and have found that they've been upgraded to 280mm discs. As the pads don't cover the whole surface I don't understand what benefit this has. Also my nearside set isn't wearing as much of the disc as the offside set. Could our resident brake experts tell me what's happeninhg here? Many thanks in advance.

There's something seriously wrong with that set-up. I assume that whoever put the bigger rotors on thought they looked cool with holes and slots, but didn't consider matching them with correctly sized calipers. Added to which, as you say, there is a massive imbalance in the pad coverage side-to-side. I would get some standard sized rotors and fit them. Have you pulled the pads out to check how they are wearing? Are they located properly within the calipers, and are the calipers properly mounted on both sides? I wouldn't be driving it like that.

Looks like they got the discs, carriers and then refitted the old calipers. On the plus side, assuming they haven't butchered the carriers, you should be able to source just the calipers - I suspect 887 / 888 items - and bolt them on with some new pads.

Did that get MOT'd? The pads and calipers don't 'lock' into the carriers at all. You're solely reliant on the mounting bolts. Scary.

The car was mot'd in May so it looks like the previous owner got away with it. I think I need to have a closer look next weekend. Thanks for the replies.

I have lost faith in some MOT stations as that should not have passed.
