I know I often bang on about "specialists" but this is serious. My 500 was doing about 12mpg yesterday and very smelly. Checked it out today and found the fuel hose by the right hand manifold spraying fuel profusely. On removing the hose I found it had delaminated and split around the clip area. These hoses were fitted at its last specialist service the day before I bought it 4k miles ago. The hoses fitted were standard fuel hose e.g. carburetor type fitment and with jubilee clips that had crushed and ruptured the outer layer. I could so easily have lost the car to fire! If you have not fitted the hoses yourself it may be worth having a look because there really are some bodgers out there ripping people off! The hose must have a suitable pressure rating of at least 40psi+ and proper 360 degree clips fitted.

Specialists my arse,,, that's cos their useless on a variety of vehicles so go for one make because once you've done one you should be able to do em all,,, Tossers most of them, relying on our fear of the cars and charge stupid money to touch them!!!
Rant over,,,, no not yet,,,, some so called specialist left my battery terminals loose,,, lost one of my stainless dash vents and if I go on I'll blow,,,,,
Do what others have done,,, build a big garage with the money you'd spend at a specialist and learn to do it yourself.
The best cars I've seen have been built and maintained by the owners and they don't tend to falter!
I was working in a garage last year,,,, for fun mainly,,, I'm no mechanic but I do know good practice and often it's shocking how much bad practice goes on.
I was determined to change the ethos but the owner didn't want to know,,,, he's not a mechanic ant just wants things in and out as fast as possible,,,
Money money money!
Saying all that I've also known some really intelligent mechanics who love their job and won't cut corners,,,,
Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

I have never trusted garages of any type, I always check tighten and examine their work. I have uncovered bad workmanship from both specialists and general service centres.
A northwest TVR specialist held in high regard on PH and recommended to me to replace my outriggers returned my car with negative camber on left rear and positive camber on the right. Taking it elsewhere to align it turned out they hadn't done any rear alignment. I'm sure it was an oversight but something as simple as a check list would have picked that up.
A northeast dealer fitted a pair of steering column UJ's one of which came loose, turned out the pinch bolt was not fitted through the column grove.

I've got to say from what I've seen whilst looking round a car for a friend recently where all the repairs have been carried out by my nearest local specialist, it was utter crap.
Twisted gaiters that were fitted very recently, a hideous looking leak from both pas and clutch area, both of which were unreported on a recent visit, they also did outriggers about 2 years ago and they're pealing badly all ready.
I'm a big fan of who I use and will remain so, but there are some crap people out there.
