Ok going to look at a chim tomorrow and it has a taraka engine. What's people thoughts on this engine, is it much of an improvement over the standard 5l?

Take a look on the Powers Performance website ( formally Tvr Power )
That should give you the spec as it's their engine!
Maybe ring Dom at the above for a chat and he'll confirm what changes he's made and why!
Regardless of all that still look for oil leaks and listen for Cam Follower rattling etc.
do you know how long ago and what milage the engine has done since the Taraka upgrade, the engine might still be under warranty but again you'll need to see who's serviced it as Dom gets tricky over who's looking after the engine.

got one in the Griff (fitted 2004) and a reasonable improvement over standard. Had to be rebuilt anyway so seemed a no brainer. Still gong strong after about 70k miles. There wasn't a warranty then.

Spent a happy couple of hours at Powers this afternoon chatting to Dom and Jay. They build a good engine and stand by their work. They rebuilt ours six months ago, supercharged so works hard and is running lovely. Phone Dom but be patient, not an easy man to get to speak to!

Have one in mine, it's a fantastic engine.
321 hp and 355 torques, smooth, perfectly mannered but a bit of a beast (in a good way)

Mark one or mark two ? Had the mark one, then the mark two, twice. Mark one naughty cam, solid lifters, mark two less cam and back to hydrolic lifters. Email me for full details.

What are they actually doing to a the engine apart from a blended base and larger throttle plate.

I thought they still used the weak long throw crank .

I really don't know, but to me understand Dom is one of the top tvr engine builders, so I assume he knows what he is doing.

Am I correct by saying to have the Taraka conversion you need to have a TVR 5l long stroke engine to start with ?

I reckon you would be better off starting with the 4.6 and build that to your spec .

Not yet , try to sort out some paperwork issues on the car first!!!

I under stand the car produces 333bhp on the tvr power rollers, I understand that's pretty good. I understand that the normal 5l produced no where near 340 but around 270/280 bhp.

Mate the engine is already in the car, so touch wood I won't be getting any work done on it , any time soon!!

Happy days biggrin

All Im saying is if you take a TVR 5l in to Power for a build all the expensive bits are with the engine which includes a very expensive crank and a pair of cracking well worked heads .. Most the work has been done .

I run a TVR Chimaera 5.0 taraka (nr 18) and after sorting out a few niggles in the first months of ownership, the car drives very well and the engine is a beast. Happy with Doms service as well.

We I have it and it does seem a tad on the quick side, certainly faster than my old tamora. Mine has a ap clutch which is bloody heavy. Though.
