cleaning the chasis

whilst looking at the starter motor or at least trying I noticed a few rust spots on the chasis, what the best way to clean off is it simply wire brush, then what paint with smoothe right or similar followed by a liberal cost of wax oil etc etc.

Scrape off what paint you can. I use the round edge of a screwdriver to check the paint for loss of adhesion. It makes a very different noise if it's loose. Scrape off what you can. It's impossible to get to the tops of the outriggers. Wire brush with a clean brush then apply some 'rust eater'. Once that's done its job apply smothrite and waxoil. I spend a lot of time making sure I have got plenty of waxoil on top of the outriggers.

Here here. You may find a wire brush a bit cumbersome in practice. I used a screwdriver to scrape the rust in all the nooks and crannies. - Do it well and you'll have peace of mind.
