For the first time in my ownership my little chim decided to play naughty today frown

Was reluctant to tick over at intermittent intervals, revs dropping out completely till it stalled. Re-started ok and once started it would tick over fine even when revving till you drove it, at which point they would drop off the clock and stall again.

Also getting some strange mid range misfires under acceleration in second and third and its not running particularly smoothly compared to normal.

Am guessing something wrong with either air/fuel, but as Im mechanically challenged would welcome some advice as other than cleaning it, im pretty useless lol.

I'd go with coil and / or ignition amp module ...

Hi Pete, do you use the cut-out switch under the dash? If not, try an ECU reset and also check the king lead from the coil. Also, when you switch off the ignition and stop the engine, do you hear the stepper reset? - it lasts about a second. if it is in the wrong place, then starting/idling will be affected.

Do you mean the dash lights switch? Doesn't that kill everything but the rev counter lights?

If it's stepper not closing then wouldn't it just fast idle? Stepper not closing also shouldn't cause misfire under load which in my past experience has usually indicated coil breaking down, no?

Hi Phil, this is my old car. That had a battery cut-out switch under the dashboard, so not the light switch in this case.

The ignition side of the car was fairly new but in the history file, the car had had several AFMs and the symptoms for the last one failing was not ticking over when cold and running lean under load. Also, stepper not resetting

I use the cut out switch all the time when parked up, so it gets regular resets hehe.

Trying to remember if it I could hear the stepper - or remember what it sounds like.... will fire it up tomorrow and have a listen, its been doing it last couple of weekends but getting progressively worse..

Tick over on cold was non existent after stopping from moving (was fine on a start), on warm it would tick over at 1k as expected, then 5 seconds later drop quickly to 400-500 revs or vanish completely - got better as it got hotter and wouldnt go completely but was still all over the shop.

OK - I shall defer to your prior personal knowledge of your vehicle. smile

Just fired her up, after checking leads not entirely sure what I was listening out for on the stepper side, I heard a mechanical ratchet type noise on shutdown that last 2 seconds or so when turned off.....?

If there is something wrong with the earething in the ecu, things like afm and throttle pot can show uo as faulty, when in fact its the old ecu (maybe it had some water damage at some point) that can not ground correctly thus scrambling the input signal of those devices. Ive been through a couple of throttle pots now and it turned out to be the ecu.

The earths; main one by the outriggers, under the rad and the one(s) on the transimission tunnel were all cleaned and lubricated about 3 years ago. The coil, ignition amp, leads and extenders where all changed about the same time.

here is the post - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

it did run ok when warmed up but didnt have the usual enthusiasm.

Well, went out this evening, pulled, pushed, prodded and firmed every lead, cable and anything that seemed related to air/fuel and spark, started it up cold start and tick over fine as per norm, went out for a 30 minute drive and it was fine..... hmmm first time in 2-3 trips its not done it, maybe loose HT, king lead... not sure :s
