Seriously, the grade of wire used was marginal at best - you got almost as much light out of the wire as you did the bulb!
As you have a burning smell and dim headlights it is probably safe to say that the existing wire has had it and will need replacing, how far back and at which point in the circuit the fault is will need investigating.
I would check the relay/fusebox for evidence of burning/overheating and if all good there you'll need to check out under the dash for issues with the switch and the magic tvr light control black box which has been known to have issues at the connector.
The usual upgrade is to use the existing wiring to switch a new relay which takes it feed directly from the alternator using a more substantial grade of wire, the output of the relay then drives the bulbs at around 14v instead of the usual 10 or so through the original setup, combined with a bulb upgrade (osram nightbreakers etc) will give a much brighter output.
You could always switch to LED lamps as an upgrade once the fault is fixed - check out ChimpOnGas's very informative thread on these.
