I'm running harder tyres that normally go on BMW's ( I think )
With firm shocks on the road I found it very harsh Daz, even running the tyres almost flat they didn't offer much grip or hope
I've just changed to softer springs and now they seem fine, reasonable grip and now seem far more compliant over the bumps,,
It's only my opinion and maybe others have different experience but if your already on hard springs you may well feel pain for the car as it shudders along,, it's all down to the side wall me thinks!

235 45/17 only come in XL ,what does 97Y XL mean ?With firm shocks on the road I found it very harsh Daz, even running the tyres almost flat they didn't offer much grip or hope

XL means extra load, Daz. I have them, 97Y XL Uniroyal Rainsport 3s, on my Saab 9-5 estate, Daz, because I was warned that Saabs in practice eat through the 94Y standard tyres too quickly. I think my Audi A8 has XLs too.
Probably not necessary for a TVR. 97 is an awfully high load rating for a TVR. Even my stiff walled R888s are only 91. The two digits translate to a number of kilos the tyre can take as load.

97 is 730kg per tyre. Way over the top, so very stiff.
My Merc 4x4, which is twice the weight of a TVR, and that tows 3.5 tonnes, is only 106 load index (950 kg).
I thought the higher number means the tyre can run with higher air pressure ,It makes no difference with the ride comfort .My Merc 4x4, which is twice the weight of a TVR, and that tows 3.5 tonnes, is only 106 load index (950 kg).
My 83 and 87 load index Federals have such soft sidewalls that after a track day with the dampers wound up hard, I can drive home on them without bothering to soften them off again.
Do that on my 91 load rating Toyo 888s and I have lost 4 fillings by the time I get home.
XL also means even stiffer sidewalls too
If you think about it, higher load rating tyres are bound to have stiffer sidewalls.
DAz, if you have a friendly tyreshop mate, you can try my 235/45 17 97Y XL Uniroyal Rainsport 3s on your TVR with pleasure.
The Saab is a 5 stud wheel, so you will need to swap them onto your TVR wheels and back again, that's all.

Hmm...well, that's true, but that's the maximum load at the maximum pressure the tyre is rated for (which will be higher pressure than a non-XL tyres).Where it gets messy is XL tyres sometimes have a lower load capacity than non-XL any given "normal" pressure. ie at 32psi 94 index tyres carry 605kg but 97 XL tyres only carry 585kg.

Is 94Y any good for a Chimaera ?

They are only showing 97Y XL in that size .
Didn't search high and low, but this is first hit on Google for that size / spec: http://www.national.co.uk/tyres-size-search?Width=...You have to select the Y speed rating to narrow it down.
Any of these suit?

dont do it
you will end up having a car that handles like those tits that stretch tyres on over sized rims
