Rear wheel movement ?

I heard what sounded like a brake pad scrapping a disc earlier, N/S Left Rear...
Jacked the car up and I have what appears to be about 3mm free play when pulling the wheel side to side,
Wheel bearing ?
I haven't got the bible near me,,
Just wondering what the usual suspects are,
It's a clunk to clunk feel and it goes right through hub to drive shaft,
It's loose within the hub, hub nut is tight, it all moves as one ?
Any ideas before I try moving the car,,,
It doesn't sound nice when turning left ?

Thanks Peter, new CV joints only a few thou miles ago,, on the way back from France I could here this faint whine,,
So faint if I moved my head it disappeared, forgot about it,,
That was it right there,,

I had a slightly whining front wheel bearing on my Mitsubishi Shogun that has gone on for thousands of miles.

I did an off road day in it a few weeks ago and the oil seal let sandy water in and it collapsed on the way home!

Thank goodness for the AA low loader!

I mean to drive it to Doms in the morning, my mates trailers already in use tomorrow,, do I crawl over there and risk causing much more damage or get 1 mile down the Road and call someone
I'll be towing in and out freely if I drive it,, PITA
final bit of mapping at about 1100 revs should have my new Mbe system tuned into the engine nicely.

Just warn Dom this afternoon that he will need to change it for you, and drive over there steadily, like as if you were in a Morris Minor with 72 eggs on the rear parcel shelf - not in boxes. So none of your usual four wheel drifting around the roundabouts of the Wet Midlands, left foot braking like a go-kart driver

3mm at the outside is obviously worn but doable for 15 miles driven sensibly.

My Shogun was 50mm at least and making horrendous noises!

As long as you haven't been driving through sand you'll be OK

I heard it on the way down in northern France, I'm lucky it's lasted this long,,,
Didn't hear or feel a thing whilst in France but again just a slight whine every now and then when coming back,,
I thought it was my old ears but they still work,

I'll try driving as straight as possible to Cov tomorrow !

as above Al. You can't put it on the rollers like that, not sure Jay would appreciate wheels flying around the workspace, lol! You need to ring Dom and make sure he can get it changed before the RR session. The workshop was stacked out when I was there on Saturday.

Hey al you hammered it all the way back from south of France at 90mph if you had not of checked it you would never had known! Let Dom know it needs a bearing and take it over there gently it will be ok

The good thing is it's a part I've not replaced before,,, if it was something that I'd replaced and broke down I'd be narked but the old girls just saying,,,,hey you're given me a face lift, big tits and I'm quiet and content,,, now fix me Arse before you get anymore of this fun,,,
I've never touched the rear wishbones, dif bushes and drive shaft UJ's replaced so the wheel bearings are about the last of the old car almost,,, hahaha,

It's wether I'm going to screw a hub and maybe even drive shaft by driving it there,
It's really not a good idea to drive far I know that!

You can hear it Rich, it's like a branch smacking off the side of the car,,, it's gone from barely audible to turning left a couple of times and a very nasty scrapping smacking sound,, the wheel moves freely over 3-5 mm.
It's flecked !,

Your right about one thing Rich,, 90 mph from dawn til dusk,,, then until the moon was high in the sky over the south,,,
16 hours of listening to that engine, smoking along it felt too,,, fking really special yet i did it with my head hanging out my butt crying,, yeah my Arse,,,
I hated the tolls, couldn't reach over so had to get out the car everytime,,,, but on the way back,,,at night,,, windy and cold as I exit the car to pay yet again, I remember this with great fondness,, the car just sitting, after 100 miles every stop, warm and rumbling, having a quick pit stop listen, pay get back in then do a movie scene everytime,,
First,,away, second, upto speed, third/forth,,, power on tap, noise and essence of speed at the tiniest squeeze of the throttle,, always feeling really fast, always totally exciting,,
Fifth,, steady boy, 100 mph in less than a few hundred yards so it seems, ease her back, engine making a barking but wonderful noise for five hours,, fuel up, eat, walk about,, get a buzz again,, do it all again,,,
Yeah 90 all the way like my life depended on it,,,

If this is still an issue, and despite what you say about the hub nut being *tight*, would be worth checking it with a bar... I've had more than one back off a tad resulting in play at the rim and noise. If that is the case, probably still need the bearing changing but might get it drivable again in the meantime
