Also on facebook pages and had good advice just looking for other possibilities.

My old battery kept going flat so I bought and had fitted my new battery. All was going well until I lay her up for 4 weeks. Put her on a battery conditioner and today took her out for a 20 mile spin. Started fine loads of spinning and no problem. Got home washed her. spent about an hour messing. Came to start again and battery absolutely flat, just a few clicks from starter motor. Lights are dim and relays clicking away under dash.

Checked the battery which was reading 12.6V

Looked at the 100amp fuse which is a 125amp fuse and cleaned the terminals which were very oily but still not enough power to turn the engine.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Was that the fuse on the chassis?

Some cars have another in line fuse in the rats nest……..

All the chimaeras electrics are rats nests, do you mean down by the battery or under the dash? It's a 97 model, would that suggest another fuse?
I checked the chassis one.

The 100 amp fuse under the car is not the issue if you still have 12.6 volts at the battery. It is between the alternator and the battery, so if it has gone the battery will not be charged by the alternator and your car will be running on battery. The battery will be under 12 volts from your description of te starter noise.

The 80 amp fuse is in the wiring in the footwell. It is above the fuse board and to the right, and is in a black holder, wrapped in tape sometimes. If that one has gone most things won't work.

Your issue sounds to me like a bad starter earth. Or a failing starter solenod. Check the voltage at the starter and compare it with the voltage at the battery.

When you say battery flat and just a few clicks on the starter, but then u say the battery measured 12.6v ? Was this when you were getting the none start clicks? If so, the I would be checking earth connections, and also the ignition wiring to the starter.
A quick check here, is to run a direct 12v feed from the battery to the starter solenoid ..if it still click s then it's classic heat soak on the starter, if the engages and starts straight away the it's possibly the wiring from the ignition at fault.

Yes, although the battery says 12.6v there is just a slight current to the rest of the car. The lights are just dim. And fans are slow.
If there was a fault with the starter solenoid would the lights not still be bright?

Check your battery terminals are tight.
Also, what make of battery is it?
And whereabouts in Yorkshire are you based?
Plenty of Yorkshire willing TVR help on here.....

I only ask about make because I have fitted three new Exide Excel batteries to three different cars in the last 12 months and all have failed and have had to be replaced. Just because it's new, doesn't mean it isn't faulty.
