4L P reg runs very nicely thank you. Pulls all the way 'round the clock(s),including 5th no hesitation - vroom vroom.

Air cleaner clean, stepper clean incl seat. plugs, leads, distributor, all A OK. So why ?

(1) At proper temps - all in the green - idle hunts +/- 50 rpm around 900 rpm. Normal ?

(2) Often, after some energetic driving and on the hot side (in limits) idle sets itself to 1200/1500 rpm and then will drop back to 900 ish after maybe 15- 20 seconds. Not normal ?
Should I be concerned or just keep my foot on the floor and not worry to much about the standing still bit I guess I am a bit of a perfectionist and would like things right. More importantly, am I looking at incipient component/sensor failure in the systems?

I have six of the critters. All of them had strange idling characteristics most of the time!

Mine does this after hard use. I've never been bothered by it. Everything returns to normal when next I use the car. It feels like the stepper is having trouble finding the right position, maybe jumping/sticking a bit. It doesn't affect the drivability so I just don't notice it anymore.

Just a thought but engine rpm increases as fans cut in when hot and drop again when reaches normal temp.

The high idle speed when stationary, gradually dropping back to a normal idle, I think is normal. I think this stops working when the road speed sensor stops working. It very rarely happened on my V8S when it had idle speed control, and used to annoy the heck out of me when it happened, but apparently it is normal.

Sounds like situation normal - I'll carry on enjoying and not give it another thought!

Went out in the sunshine - thought I had better check out halfords (I said as I left Mrs M clearing the garden) 9 minutes as the crow flies, an hour via Lancaster . came back in the snow never mind, got my fix for the day.
