I had similar
Make sure the Vacuum advance on the lower half of the Distributor is secure and the thin pipe from the Plenum to this is OK. My Vacuum advance had fallen off the side of the dizzy and it ran like crap, was dumping raw fuel into exhaust - my front pipes were a bit red too! (ooer!) I was not confident enough to fit so I called the AA (have the platinuum cover) and asked them to send one the older geezers who "knew" rnage rover V8's (thought this was more likely than TVR's). Geezer arrived - one tea latter - engine burbling like a madman in an asylum! Did not even ave to get it re-timed!
Also - Water Temp sensor to the ECU is a good one to change for about £15 notes befor you start paying for mechanics - it was not this on mine but is sure smoothed things out around town!

Bad luck mate. Sympathy sent....
When you get the head gasket replaced, make sure it's the top spec one - I think there's a composite one or something. Have a look at RPI's website.
They'll be fitting new exhaust maniflod gaskets too hopefully, that'll be another common failure that won't need doing again for a good while.
Cheers,
Matt

No when they replace the head gasket, they should replace it with the same one. The gaskets varied tremendously in thickness and this changes the compression ratio. Get the wrong thickness and it can cause pinking and other problems. The gasket set is around £125 and a new set of bolts is about the same sort of price. You will need a new set as they are special stretch bolts. 17 hours sounds a bit steep to me - I would expect half that. Tower View did mine a while back for around the £700-800 mark. Worth giving them a call and using some of the money saved to placate the GF.
Worth getting the rest of the engine checked e.g. camshaft and rockers. Mine had to be replaced because the previous looker afterers had not set the preload correctly. The resultsof all this was another £700 odd on the bill.
Piccies of the damage are in the bible.

I may have a very simple solution to what this is.
I replaced the plug leads on my Chim and managed to get the 6 and 8 plus leads reversed. Very basic and silly mistake, especially since the leads were numbered quite clearly.
Anyway this had exactly the effect you describe. Luckily I spotted something was wrong after only a few minutes drive and was able to resolve the problem.
I'm not sure I'd be driving around in the car if it has this problem though. There is supposedly a risk of the unspent fuel damaging the CAT and that would be expensive.
Since you have recently changed the plugs/leads, I'd check this out.
