This morning, when I first got into the car, I noticed a "squelching" noise when I depressed the brake pedal and thought nothing of it. Set off and, to my horror, when I pressed the brake not a lot happened. I had to stand on the brakes to make it stop. I drove slowly to a quiet stretch of local road and found that within a couple of minutes things were back to normal. Also the breaking improved the higher the engine revved.

Would this indicate a leaking vacuum hose or even worn master cylinder seals.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks in advance

What did the pedal do?

If it was 'hard', and simply needed a monumental amount of effort to stop the car, then you have a servo fault. The better braking with increased engine speed would seem to back this up, too.

I'd be very careful - as you say, it may be worn master cylinder seals. I had a master cylinder failure last year - not good!
Best keep an eye on this.

The pedal acted normally. Not too hard not too soft. Spooky thing is, that after a few mins everthing seemed OK.

If it was the master cylinder seals, would the pedal feel "spongey"?

Can also be a failure in one of the calliper seals as well. Time to get the brakes checked for leaks. This is not something to leave to chance.

Thanks Steve. I've checked around the callipers and no leaks are apparent. The fluid looks clean and healthy and there is no loss.

Could it be a simple case of a perished or kinked vacuum hose? BTW which is the vacuum hose.

Totally different car, but I had this happen twice on the Clutch (hydraulic) on my Puma, both times having left the car parked overnight on a slope. On each occurence it went back to the dealership who could not find a fault anywhere.. the second time they had the slave cylinder off the car and still couldn't find a fault. Fortunately it was one of theose things that you found out before the car actually started moving

Cheers,
Matt.
