I have just been informed that the chassis corrosion I have on my 92 4.3 pre-cat Griff will require the body to be removed. It went in to be cleaned and waxoyled but when they started it was worse than expected .

I have been quoted "between 2.5k and 3K" for the work to remove the body and clean the existing chssis. Is this reasonable? Would it be cheaper to have a new chassis? If not cheaper would it be worth the extra? (IE not much extra and obviously corrosion free, or the newer chassis is better?)

It is down as a winter project for me and my specialist (work for them, money finding for me ) and is expected to be off the road for atleast a month. probably November/Decemeber or January/Febuary time frames.

This is on top of my stearing rack having just gone and the factory just about to go on holiday - so no useable TVR for the next month. (Early Griff's have a TVR special stearing rack so they need 1-2 weeks to build a new one plus 2 weeks holiday from this evening ). Oh, an it's a £500 part plus fitting .

Good job I wasn't planning to sell it anytime soon.

Cheers,
Ian

Ian,

Before you do anything else call Adrian @ Exactly TVR -He quoted about £200 exchange to sort my steering rack (slight play in mine) and I'm sure he would do you a much much better deal on the chassis corrosion as well - £2k seems way over the odds for refurbishment - I think you could get a complete new setup for less than that. I know that Exactly's M series chassis refurbs start at around £500 depending on how much of the initial leg work you do to strip the car down.

Incidentally when you get the chassis done get the front wishbones changed to the newer 500 spec - makes the car drive a whole lot better.

Hope this helps

Andy.

TMS recondition steering racks for £100,i'd try them.

Last summer I removed and re-powdercoated my chassis and total cost including the rack and all new bushes came to £850, but I did all the work myself and saved thousands.(it was an easy job to be honest)

If your going to the bother of having the body removed then it would be worthwhile if your going to keep the car some time ,to have the chassis re-powdercoated as this gives another 8-10 years life to it and is a far better proposition than trying to repair the existing damage to the powder coating.

The quote you were given is about the same price that I had, which is probably mostly down to labour charges.

Unfortunately the factory went on holiday at the same time and I had to wait 7 weeks for the bushes to arrive!!!!!!

Anyway good luck with it all

That's good news - could you pop over and do mine one weekend when you're a bit bored? I'll make you nice cup of tea while you're at it... and as many biscuits as you can eat!

It is not difficult to remove the body off a TVR, although I'm not sure I'd want to do it again! (I did my 'M' the Griff (1996 p) seems fine apart from the wishbones and they are consumables!

If anyone does go this route I would advise getting the chassis zinc coated as it will hten never rust (at least not from the outside :-)

If you fancy popping over and doing my chassis I'll even lay on the as well as tea and biccies

There are two problems with doing it myself. The first is a lack of space to keep all of the parts. The second is that I am a complete numpty with spanners.

Ho humm, looks like I'll have to o the expenseive route unless someone comes up with a better offer

I'll definately be looking at the recon box though - or possibly upgrading to PAS.

Cheers,
Ian

I am fairly sure they are quoting about 1/2 that (50-ish hours) plus
parts etc.

I have one direct contact from a chassis restorer through this group. Anyone else want to send me a quote via email?
