Hi guys

I have just had my first TVR delivered, one stupid thing I can't fathom out is how to open the boot, is there a lever inside? A have a black remote, about matchbox size but half the thickness with 2 small buttons, both seem to lock the doors, but the left one also has a beep from the car?
Any assistance on understanding the above would be great.
Tha car is a 1995 Chimaera 500.
Many thanks
Paul

With the ignition on, on the dash underside on the right hand side of the steering column press the button to open the boot.

The one on the left will disable the dash lights.

Thank you, that works, I hadn't even realised that I hadn't yet found the filler cap, good job as the gauge shows empty😊.
There's a label on the petrol filler to say only use super unleaded 98, but I thought I had read on the forums that 95 was normal, any thoughts on that?
It would also be great to understand the 2 buttons on the remote?
Thanks
Paul

You probably think both buttons lock the car because of the clunk from the solenoids releasing the door locks. If you get a beep and the car doesn't lock, it's probably because you have a door or either the bonnet or boot not shut properly.

Welcome - photos of the car as and when you are ready.

Some cars have had the alarm system modified to open the boot from the key fob, but this was not a standard feature as as I know. The standard boot release is push button under the dash, above your right knee, and only works with the ignition on.

The forums on here have some very nice and and helpful people on them and most questions get answered quickly.

Where are you based? It might be worth popping along to you local TVR Car Club meeting or keep an eye of the forums here for events local to you. There will still be a few things going on, although it really picks up in the spring.

Hello and welcome,Regarding the fuel....

I started off using Shell V power about every three tanks, then went through a phase of using V power every tank full.

But I was/am really struggling to notice any difference in the running of the car when using it. I keep record of my mpg using Fuelly.com and don't seem to gain or loose anything when using V power. I think I just convinced myself that Vpower made it feel more lively and without having any running problems using it just kept on using it.

Only one of my last Ten tank fulls has been Vpower and the only difference running on standard uld that I have seen is the saving of about £5 at the pumps.

Also don't rely to much on the fuel gauge as they can be a bit hit & miss when at the lower end. I came to a spluttering halt sometime back when it was still showing a reading,so since then I reset the trip when filling up and when I approach the 200 mark I aim to fill up. Depending on your journeys you can see more miles 240+ from my 400.

Mine doesn't have a low level fuel light either and so I believe not many do.

I would use v power or BP ultimate only, as premium fuels currently contain no ethenol, its not a good thing to have.

Without wanting to be contentious (but I know that I will be)...

My gut feeling about the specification by TVR to use Super Unleaded is the same as the specification by TVR to use Mobil One ... a bit of a ruse to make the car seems a bit more 'special' than it is. (Believe me ... I love mine and so I'm not trying to put them down ... just being realistic.)

I reckon (buy guesstimation since my odometer hasn't worked in years) that I've done about 80-100,000 miles in mine before the engine needed a rebuild (which is the state she's in now) and she'd done nearly 70,000 miles when I got her ... I started out using Super Unleaded but dropped back to using regular Unleaded for about the last four years.

IMO the engines (certainly as standard) and the ECU programming aren't advanced enough to actually take advantage of the difference between Regular and Super ... similarly the recommended Mobil One just seems to be the wrong grade and type of oil for use in these relatively prehistoric engines (Millers CSS 20w60 seems to be a much more suitable choice and quite widely used).

Weather you run 98 or 95 would come down to the cylinder head compression ratio. I believe the 500s had ratio of 10-10.5:1 the 400 Chimaera had a standard ratio 9.35:1 which takes 95 with no issues.
I personally would be a little more cautious about putting 95 in a 500. Especially on a hot day and on full throttle.

I had a 1995 Chimaera 500 in 2000/01. It definitely pinked on regular unleaded. I used Shell Optimax at the time (now called V-power).

The 4.0 litre I now have, however, seems to run the same on either flavour of unleaded.

1. When you post photos of your car, please post one of your key so we can tell you what the buttons do.
2. We're a friendly lot, so do tell us roughly where you live so we can suggest appropriate meetings etc and one of us can look over your car with you and give you some useful tips.
3. The guy who built my 5 litre engine (10:1 compression ratio) told me to use standard unleaded on the road and super unleaded on the race track.

Mine has run on the cheapest supermarket fuel for the past 6 years. I've tried more expensive variations of grade, with absolutely no noticeable difference in performance.

It is only a 400 though biggrin

Edited to add: I bought my car with a Clifford aftermarket alarm fitted, so boot opening could be done remotely, however, that feature on the alarm fob was broken for 5 years and I recently got around fixed it, I wish I fixed it sooner tongue out

Open the picture in 'Paint' and resize it. (50% should do it.) PH only takes 2.0MB pic size max so you need to make it smaller.

Finally found a way to get the pic above😊

Any thoughts on how to refix \ replace the Velcro that fixes the hood base just behind the doors, the old glue has come away and is quite a mess, I also would like to do a repair to the hood fabric as it has a split about 50mm where it fixes near the upright frame, does anyone know if it can be done and if so by who in the Shrewsbury area?
Thanks
Paul

I've seen a lot of Chimaera with velcro detached. A previous owner secured mine with pop rivets. A good solution I think. You can't see them when the roof is up anyway.
