Worn cam?

Measured cam lift before taking n/s head off and these were the numbers (98 450):

Cylinder
1 6.52 & 9.06 mm
3 8.24 & 8.98 mm
5 8.76 & 6.1 mm
7 9.76 & 9.04 mm

The numbers in the 6mm range aren't encouraging but no I've no idea on what's acceptable. Just wanted to check before i take off o/s.

I am no expert, but I would have thought that they should be pretty much all the same give or take a few thou.

Can I ask how you measured this?
Are you sure the hydraulic lifters weren't collapsing during measuring?

If it has indeed lost 3mm that's 30% of the lift gone = wasted.
Time for a new cam + lifters

Hope the rest of the engine didn't suffer from the metal swarf.

My engine 2000 4.6 @ 54k miles produced good power and ran well but on inspection the cam was fooked across 2 lobes on no1 cylinder in fact I would have said 50% of the lobe was gone

Friends 2000 4.6 @48k was exactly the same, no brainer change it

Measured with rocker/valvetrain off. Used dtm on pushod tips so no load - well i asume no load.

So cam is stuffed then?

Mine ran well too, no obvious signs of problems - well until i sufered coolant loss which set me on this path. The cam check was extra as the heads were coming off and i though "best measure cam lit"

What is the mileage on the engine?

It's not all that expensive to change the cam really. I changed mine for a V8D MC1, didn't cost that much to do.

About 58k.

Plenum, air intake, alternator, PS pump is off so might as well change out. It all started with bloody coolant leak, that I still haven't figured out and its ending with a knackered cam, leaking inlet valve, head gasket....!

MC1 seems sensible enough for me (road only) and will do the can myself as 'only' cross member, rad, swirl and crank pulley appear to need to come off. Never dialled in a cam before so tips appreciated.

I take it followers, cam seals, valve seals should be changed what about rockers as current ones look good with no indents.

I was in the same situation. I was changing my valley gasket and thought I may as well change the cam whilst it's apart. Mine was on 60k miles.

MC1 seems good, nice and smooth and easy to drive.

I'm running an mc1 from v8d. Very smooth and grunty but it is also running an aftermarket ecru which might help
