head off - small scratches - skim?

took off heads saw some scratches on the face. Just wondered if these were ok or needing a skim?

Is felt with thumb nail.

PS - inlet on right side is heavily coked.

As you have mentioned that it overheated I would send the heads off to check they are flat and skim accordingly regardless of the scratches.

My fear would be that you rebuild the engine and a couple of months down the line you end up with the heads off again and weeks of sunny weather wasted because you didn't do it thoroughly this time round.

If you are this far in do it properly and get the heads sent to a good engineering firm to test them for you.

The scratches look recent, I would want to build an engine I knew I could trust so I would want the heads perfect before refitting.

Thanks Gruff. Sound, sensible advise which is what I need right now.

The gasket is fine to the eye the head marks must have come from head getting jarred on removal as earth strap was still on.

The main reason i took off is air intake loss (40%) - intake valve leaking, and the intake cam lobe was just over 3mm compared to the highest lobe. Not sure of effect or leaking intake AND low lift. I thought it would lead to problems. I'll post some pics.

Number 1 cylinder intake valve and surround is heavily coked plus there's a slight chip in one of the rockers.

Ps - I really need a cam change as well. Hoho!
