About a week ago I posted saying the idle was very up and down, ranging from stall to 2,000 revs bouncing up and down.

The over whelming response was CLEAN THE STEPPER MOTOR which with your expert advice I did. No change. So I took it back to the dealer I bought from as still under warranty, they did some checks and put in a new stepper motor, cleaned the plug and adjusted the gap, etc etc. Great, seemed to idle ok in the car park of the dealership. Drove home and yes the up and down reving at idle has started again.

Its not that I dont like the sound of the engine, but can you imagine sitting at every set of lights with the engine reving up and down making everyone think you are up for a race or your some kind of idiot.

Any other suggestions on what to try next????

I think I might have said this before...I've had six of 'em, done quite a few miles, and they all had strange idle characteristics some of the time! This often varies from one day to the next with no apparent reason. Get used to pressing the accelerator with your toes, whilst treading on the brake when idle mode required! (and idle is low)

Sounds like the base idle is not set correctly and it is hunting up and down.. Mine did this when it was hot. Reset the base idle and now all is well.... Hope this helps.

Try disconnecting the stepper motor once it is idling at about the right speed, just to confirm it is actually the stepper motor causing it and not something else. (Just as a matter if interest I don't have any idle control at all on mine now, it needs a little help to keep it running for the first minute or so from cold but apart from that is fine. And none of this faffing around with the idle speed.)

sounds like either false air or ecu engine temp sensor possibly.check for the air leaks first between the air mass meter and the engine by spraying some bradex engine start or similar around all possible joints/gaskets and listening for obvious changes in engine speed/behaviour.check the temp sensor resistance is what it should be-at 20oC it should be between 2-3k ohms and at 80oC it should be 250-400 ohms as a guide, but more specific figures should be on here somewhere in the archives.

You don't say whether you've tried my earlier suggestion of cleaning the air inlet around the throttle butterfly. This is a classic problem with the Chimaera/Griff and other cars also. Don't adjust your base idle until you've carried out the cleaning operation because cleaning the gunge out directly affects the base idle. If you need further details for carrying this out then contact me by email and I'll let you have my phone number to discuss.
Let me know how you get on.

Have you had any luck on this yet? I've exactly the same problem and my dealer has also cleaned the stepper and the plugs etc with no effect.
