Hi guys,
Sadly due to changing circumstances, I think it's time to give up my little '99 400 - at least for a couple of years... I would have though now is a decent time to try and sell the old girl - I was just wondering, realistically, how long is it taking to sell privately at the moment?

It's always sad when an owner has to part with such a great car,,,
I'd expect it to take months to sell,, but it could sell in a week, how longs a piece of string!!!
All I know is I wouldn't act like a motivated sellor or someone will steal it off you.
You'll never buy one in the future for whatever price you sell it at as it will have gone up in price, there climbing and one day the values will explode,,, well if not I'm foooked as I've spent a fortune on mine

Is a shame to have to sell, I noticed you did well buying it for £9!!
They do hang around a long time I've noticed. Are they really going up as fast as we believe or are the trade sellers pushing them up? I think it's hard to pitch the prices correctly because if you advertise it to low people get suspicious. If needing rid, then eBay with a reasonable reserve seems to get them snapped up. But as ClassiChimi said don't give it away!

Unless you need the cash could you not lay it up. SORN and lay up insurance - job done and no expense until you decide to resurrect the old girl.
As noted above you will be unlikely to buy one for what you get for yours plus it will always be an unknown quantity. At least with your own car whatever faults it may have you know what faults it does have.
On the plus side Spring is starting spring so the open top market should pick up a little in the near future if you do want to sell.

Thanks for the replies guys.... All valid points - maybe I should look at another way of raising the spare cash I need (houses, eh ?). It is nice that I know her now...
Perhaps the Spring / Summer will make me forget the idea altogether and a burble in the sunshine will envigorate my brain to find other cash raising methods!

There's a 450 on ebay with no MoT, duff rear tyres, cracked dash and dodgy paint at the rear. With a few hrs to go it's past £8k already:

I have my doubts about how genuine some of the sales on ebay are, especially the astronomical prices some old supposedly 'classic' cars seem to go for. Especially old rusty Fords.

Sold for 9250, a good price for a 450 but if that was in the classifieds in that described condition it possibly would have taken a while to shift?
