C/V joints and whining

I have a bit of play in my C/V joints, the symptoms are pretty obvious, but I`m getting a whining from the back end of the car. I don`t know whether it`s the diff` or the C/Vs causing it. I had a diff wear out on my S2 a few years ago and the sympToms for that was a deep rumble. Any pointers please from the knowledgable would be helpful.

CV's wont cause you a whine,more knocking rattling clonking, maybe a wheel bearing but that's more grumbling and sometimes load dependant if loaded one side or another in bends, most likely the diff, is it on load or overrun, or just constant? Mileage, oil levels or oil change? suddenly happened or developed over time?

Rich mentioned wheel bearing, I had a N/S rear wheel bearing breaking down, that was a whine, but only very quiet, if it's noisy and the wheels seem tight and straight look elsewhere but that's what the whine was on mine, hope that helps,,

My CV joints have been diagnosed as requiring replacement. The only noise is a quiet clunk sometimes when changing gear and dropping the clutch back in.

Thanks for the replies , I think I`ll go for an oil change in the diff, the car has 80,000 miles on it and the noise has only just started. Think I`ll get the wheels balanced too as well as ordering new C/V joints

I think by that mileage most diffs whine. I've just had the oil changed in mine and the gearbox (which was very low) and its definately alot quieter although not 100%.

I wouldn't waste your money on CV joints. Mine only need replacing at 97,000 miles because I have done 30+ track days abusing them, and even mine aren't dire yet. To do the job properly with GKN CV joints will cost you around £500-600 fitted.

Check the bearings first, I thought I'd be pulling my diff for a refurb as it had a whine type noise. Checked the rear bearings and one was noisy, changed it out and it's as quiet as a mouse now.

I was getting a slight cv clunk last year with 42K miles on the clock. I decided to replace rather than wait for a big failure to happen. Just as well really because when replacing I found the repeated clunking knocked out a couple of driveshaft splines. Thought I'd mention this just to warn you things can get more expensive. I suppose there's an argument to replace driveshafts irrespective of conditon as the mating surfaces will be potentially different between new cvs and old shafts.
