Sump plug fell out

Took the Chim out earlier, nice bimble into barry, a guy behind me waving like mad to pull over, "You`re losing fluid mate" Holy crap, the sump plug hag come out. So, is it a standard Rover V8 plug or a special ? I`m concerned about the engine, it was running fine before I pulled over, no horrible noises, so, I`m hoping all is well. It`s a 96 400 so I`m guessing that the oil pump will need priming when filling up, any thoughts ?

The standard sump plug becomes unscrewed as it is slightly larger and hangs slightly below the bottom of the sump. This happens as the sump touches the ground on speed humps and low areas.

The pump does not require priming at all.

Hopefully, no damage will have been done.

Get the david brown tractor sump plug to replace it, doesn't stick out as much so it's less likely to get hit.

Plus even if it does get hit, there are no flats or edges like there is on the standard one to lever it around to unscrew.

I`d stick a dowty washer on the new one as well because the washer that comes with the tractor plug doesnt aline exactly with the sump.

I got one of these from Steve Heath, not sure they're available any more, its the tractor plug with a magnet.



By the way, it's the hex flats that cause it to unscrew

It`s strange that you mentioned that, I bottomed out a couple of days ago on a speed bump in Bridgend, now I know the culprit ! bds

Yeah Andy, the exhaust on the S takes the punishment, mine is slightly out of shape , bloody british roads.
