Is there any performance gain in using fuel with a higher octane rating?

I’m only aware of the need for higher Octane when the CR is high, what constitutes high in a RV8?

If our known CR can tolerate lower Octane, should we be setting our ignition Advance Timing accordingly?

I'm no expert but I do know from several tuned audi's that the higher octane you run the more advance you can run ,I believe that the engines of that era were running on 97 0ctane.I only use V max and my 4.0l runs really well on it. Somebody with real knowledge will be along shortly for sure
