I have a 94 plate Chimaera, with the rover gearbox and GKN diff.

I have ordered what I thought was enough oil of the correct type, but I am now finding conflicting information about the oil required.

Based on what I first found;
Gearbox - 1.5L required - 2L ordered
Diff - 2L required - 3L ordered

However I have read a few post today suggesting the gearbox needs 2.5L.

Can somebody please confirm how much oil is actually required for the diff and gearbox as I do not want to find out I am short once I start to fill it up.

I would also be very grateful if somebody could confirm the size and the size and type of tools required to get the drain and filler plugs out of the diff and gearbox.

Diff drain - 1/2" spanner
Diff fill - 1/2" drive (like the end of a socket extension bar)

Gear drain - spanner - size unknown
diff fill = 1/2" drive

The exhaust will be coming off to do this, which I understand will help with access.

The LT 77 requires 1.7 ltr of oil, you quoted spanner sizes are correct...
The GKN takes about 1.5 ltr, so 3 ltr will give you a refill....spanner sizes are correct

You do not need to take the exhaust off, waist of effort, but DO take out the filler plugs out first !

As to oils, see various heated debates, as to what is best

thanks Frank.

I have avoided the topic of which oil is best - made my choice and wanted to keep this thread very much on the 'how to do it' topic.

Whaaaa...but Mobil1HalfordsBMWLonglifeCastrol... <explodes>
I didn't take my 'zorst off - managed to leisurely fill the diff with a wheel off and a couple of feet of 15mm pushfit plastic plumbing pipe, tape and a funnel dangling in from the wheelwell.

Refusing to take the bait.

Just waiting for confirmation of the drive/spanner sizes for the gearbox please.

think its a 1'2" spanner, iirc (it easily rounds, probably a wrench would be better...)

I put Morris Lodexol in my BTR but there are many options! Think I bought 2 litres and had a bit spare so 1.7 litres sounds about right.

Can anyone confirm the tool sizes below please

Diff drain - 1/2" spanner for 1/2" square male bolt head
Diff fill - 1/2" drive (like the end of a socket extension bar) for 1/2" female square socket

Gear drain - 1 1/4" or 32mm spanner for hex nut head
diff fill = 1/2" spanner for 1/2" square male bolt head

Also, which of these will need a new copper crush washer? What sizes are required?

I will be doing all this with the car raised on ramps/axel stands on my drive, and want to make sure I have everything I need before I start.

Ive done loads of research on the oil for the LT77- basically ATF was specified as its syncro is not that strong and cant cut through thicker oil, so ATF is a nasty work around that causes the box to wear faster than needs be. Now difflock is a nice synthetic but costs a bloody fortune, but Comma does a 75 grade (relatively thin) full synthetic GL4 spec oil that seems ideal at about £10 a ltr. The LT77 is not a fussy gearbox oil wise, but it will be very notchy when cold if you run standard gearbox oil. You do need a GL4 grade, not GL5 (high shear grade) as some of the GL5 additives may cause problems with some of the metals used in the LT77.
