Power steeering or not
Discussion
Second question.
Have there been any previous threads on the relative merits of the above.
If not what is the general opinion out there?
My Chimp currently does not have it, anyone got any idea of what it costs for a retro fit?
Noticed the spelling mistake, but it seems that you can't edit a topic.

wheather or not its a good thing is entirely personal preference.i just about prefer unassisted, but its a close call.ive owned both by the way.you have to consider how you use the car and ideally try both to compare.it will add value to your car in all cases, but how much depends on the car ie a 5.0l with a/c in a good colour with low mileage and in lovely condition will see you get most of your money back.on the other hand a 4.0l with no options and high mileage and poor colour will only improve in value a little if any.when you part ex your chimaera the first two questions a dealer will usually ask you is what engine is it and has it got pas!
I've driven about four of each and ended up without, it's a personal thing like the marmite. i find that above walking speed i don't notice it at all. But a bit of town driving or tight parking and I do notice it a lot. On the other hand - you get a lot more feel for the road surface/feedback through the wheel without p/s.
Thanks for the feedback. Should have driven one with power steering before I bought one without I guess.
I suppose the best idea is to test drive one with power steering now before I make any further enquiries.
As far as getting the value back on resale various people said it depends on the car. Mine is an R reg 4.5 in crimson starmist with 28k on the clock.. Is that good or bad as far as re-sale is concerned?

I wouldn't worry about PAS I have driven both, and yes it is a "nice to have", but I wouldn't call it a "must to have" (indeed the 2nd CHim I bought I got non-PAS)
AS for getting value back on these cars, depends what value you put on the ownership experience. If you buy well you can sell without loss a year or so later, but if you buy at "going rate" and have the car for 2+ years, ultimately depreciation will have crept in. The good news is that it ain't half as bad as with any other car I have owned.. ultiately ANY* Chim is going to be worth 8k plus so you're lot going to lose you're livelihood with one. Knowing sod all about your car, a straight R reg 4.5 v.low miler should be worth £14-£15k IMO.
*unless its a poor Accident repair job and Listed, or the chassis is knackered.
Cheers
Matt
I've found the only problem with non-PAS is its quite difficult to turn at low speeds (ie less than 5mph), but you develop stronger arms for that, and also when reversing the wheels always want to straighten back out, which again isn't a problem.
Don't worry about it - you probably get more feel through the steering wheel without it anyway.

I find that the problem with PAS is that I end up driving the vehicle like a fork truck;
One hand glued to the gearstick, one hand glued to the steering wheel. You still get a reasonable ammount of feel at speed with it, on the twisties, but the bigger problem is motorway driving, where it usually weighs up. It's low speed where I really dont like it. Yes it makes parking easier, but you really don't get any kind of feel on things like mini roundabouts.
Certainly, my ancient 911 is vauge enough in these circumstances without it.
As for parking, well, learn to park properly. Always parallel park, and practice getting it right. It's not that bad then. With PAs there is this huge temptation to go in forwards, and who cares about the kerb. It really doesn't do your tyres or suspension any good.
Melv, I hope you're listening!

Again thanks for info. I think I will stick with non-power.
M@H Looks like I should be OK on resale. Based on your figures I bought well. Had a small anount of work done at Racing Green and got them to look over it and they said it was in good nick. Needs a few cosmetic bits and a bit more work on the next service but looking good so far.
My only problem now is literally just got home after an operation (gallbladder out)
so I don't know when I can take it out again.
It a shame just looking at it in the garage.

Do you wear a bra (through necessity rather than because it's nice..........) ?
If the answer is "yes" then by all means have PAS fitted
If the answer is "no" and you still want PAS fitted then unfortunately you may also find yourself furtively being measured up for a titty hammock.....

I presume that you don't think PAS is needed then!!!
Actually the only bra I think I personally would look good in is a Cer..bra without PAS of course.
