"Practical Performance Car"…

Practical - yep… bags of room, unless you are over 5'6 and a passenger
Performance - yep, got some of that.
Car - Hmm… depends if it was a good day at Blackpool or not

although I was going to keep this quiet…

Then again, maybe we could shake the golf-cart image… … Chimaera = Mob body cart…

The article states that the engine is a rover 4.0l v8 with a performance cam... is that really the only difference? That doesn't sound very difficult to maintain or (if it came to it) rebuild at home. Is this the same engine as fitted to the V8S?

When the outriggers rot is it simply a case of jacking up the body and fabricating some new ones out of ERW tube (or CDS?), welding them on, painting them and dropping the body again?

Where are all these 7k chims advertised then?

Regards,

Mark

The article is like an advert for Joospeed!

Good write up but the information seems a little inconsistent. They bang on about a 4.0 taking 4.7 secs to get to 60 and a few other strange odds and sods. No mention of 4.5 or 5's though.

They do admit to TVR ponies not quite being fully grown horses though, if you know what I mean.

The pics are of a very nice 4.5 97 P? with what looks like th 5.0 wheels (not sure as I'm no expert).
Looks like mine, but with the paint in better nick.

Hopefully it will help the prices go up. They stated that you could pick one up for as little as £5k! Seemed to think that 7-9k was realistic for a 4.0, which seems a little on the low side to me. Maybe I'm just being hopeful?

There's plenty of cheap tvrs round if you look hard enough. A friend of mine picked up a crash damaged but repaired 4.3 griff for 7k, my MOT station regularly sells early high mileage chims for 7-10k. Early cerbies go in the trade for under 10k these days

I'd say that for the sort fo person who reads PPC (hard working, keen to spot a bargain, not afraid of a bit of mechanical work) then the article is pretty much spot on.

I guess there's a limit to how much info they can put in .. the reporter stayed with me for abuot 2 hours and took pages and pages of notes, much of which I'm sure ws paired down to make the mag. in this there's bound to be bits kleft out which maybe should be in, but it's not bad I think .. well done to PPC

No one know anything about either questions? Is the chim not currently the sort of car people maintain or service themselves.

Thanks,

Mark

It's great mag if you are into old cars and doing work and mods yourself. I've got all the issues and it's got some top stuff in it. It inspired me to finally get off my backside and start building a locost (7-alike) with an R1 engine... just built most of the chassis and currently fabricating engine mounts. It's a great hobby.

The std engines are very little modified .. cam and chip changes .. I think the later blocks area bit stiffer, but you had to pay extra for big valve heads etc if you wanted them

I don't remove the body for replacing the outriggers (those that do charge about 1500 pounds per side!) .. I cut the rot out, make sleeve sections and weld back in.

I don't think the 4.5s or 5 litres really come into that budget .. tho there are early 5 litre chims they're very rare, and the 4.5 of Chris was used I think because it's beautiful car and photographs well
