Is this oil pump knackered?

It's scratched about 1mm deep where the gears run and the gear faces have matching scratches. Looks like something has been through it. I assume it needs replacing - am I right before a buy a new one?

Otherwise, if it's making adequate pressure with no sign of current fretting or galling, I'd carry on running it - the damage was probably done aeons ago

Will the gears spin freely without the gasket? If not, your scratches aren't all that deep. What pressure did you have?

Poor pressure at idle. Once the oil was hot circa 70 degrees (I have an oil temp guage) it was down around the 5psi mark.

Ah ok. Depending on how bad the scoring is you can put it on a flat surface with wet and dry and polish it out. If its past that could you not have it skimmed back to flat.

Thanks. Yes can't get a new one in time for the weekend so I am going to polish out the scratches. Another evening of fun fun fun

For something as important as the "heart" of the engine, I would fit a new pump every time.

I can't see any reason why you couldn't skim both sides flat

Do you have a aftermarket oil pressure gauge?

I had this with nearly every rover engine I owned. Thicker oil gave me some peace of mind and people will sometimes point out that it flow that's needed, not pressure. The later pumps are vastly superior to the original type. There used to be a longer gear conversion available from Real Steel for your pump. It'll be for a buick.

I'd be inclined to convert to serp front end for piece of mind.

Perry, (77Racing) always had oil pressure issues with his preserp griff on track, losing pressure completely due to Triple 8s and aggressive driving. Completely sorted with a new front end!
