ok that seems to make sense. No if I have a wrong relay in and the lamda sensors are on when the engine is off this will flatten the battery. Understand that bit.
But when I turn the engine on, what do the lamdan sensors do with the wrong relay in, do they turn off, as some one else seems to imply, if this is the case would that caus the engine to rev up and down when at idle??

If you fit an ordinary changeover relay, yes the lambda heaters switch off when they should switch on. This is no big deal, just means it takes them longer to come up to working termperature, they'll heat up anyway within ten minutes or so. If the revs are going up and down there's clearly something wrong but you have no real way of knowing what. (You may find people say 'change X' because that was the problem on their cars, but there are plenty of potential causes so pointless guessing.) Your best bet is to get it to somebody with diagnostic equipment who can check what the sensor inputs are and what fault codes are present. It'll cost a few quid but IMO this is money well spent.
Edited to add: the eratic idle problem crops up again and again here and you've probably read most of the advice by now. Just in case you haven't though: clean the stepper motor, if that doesn't work clean it again, if you still have the problem after the third attempt either that isn't the stepper motor lol or it's some other problem. Try disconnecting the stepper motor once the idle has settled to see whether this removes the hunting, if it does then CLEAN THE STEPPER MOTOR (properly this time!) otherwise if it still hunts then you have some other problem which needs to be tracked down.
