So I managed a weekend at Shakey with no issues.
Took the car out to a local car meet today and somethings not happy under load at the rear.
It feels like somethings broke or suddenly out of balance.
Ive got the car jacked up and all seems fine with the usual play in the drivetrain.
Both rears are turning together and I cant feel any knocks.

I suspect the diff or maybe the gearbox.
Any ideas on how to locate the problem?

When I had on and off power clunking at the rear it turned out to be the rear diff mount.

You don't need this with your busy calendar!

Bit more of a description?

Its a constant clunk when under load. Gonna go and see if I can feel any play in the CVs

It is always difficult to feel for play in the CV joints.

That sort of noise won't be the prop shaft joints.

Let us hope it is not the diff!

rear end feels smooth enough.
The flywheel feels solid so rules out that coming loose.
I might drop the diff and gearbox fluid and see if that tells a story

Broken tooth on the crown wheel in the diff was the result of my clunking under load.
I hope it's not that because it was a bugger to find and only confirmed by pulling the diff out and stripping it.

Hmmm, that might of been the penalty of dropping the clutch on drag radials when you achieved that 11! scratchchin

Yep and not even with nitrous.
I think I am gonna have to start stripping it

I had that happen on the cool down lap after qualifying 9th on a 70+ car grid at Spa Francorchamps a few years ago. Spent four days watching the racing frown I really hope that's not the case for you Dereck.

ps it sounded like a continueus clonk on slight power on, put it up on axle stands and run it to diagnose diff issue be what I would do

When I say play I mean across the flange not rotational.

The diff is half out. Will remove it in the morning and hoping John Reid can sort it by Friday

Ahh! Sounds shagged!

Have you had it rebuilt before? If so how long has it lasted?

John Reid rebuilt it with the 3.08 gears about 2 years ago. Not a many miles but a lot af drag abuse.

John Reid is one of the best out their for TVR boxes and diffs. Might be worth having a chat with him to see whether he can build you a stronger one. I can see a full bore launch on drag radials being very harsh on the drivetrain components!

Sounds like a failed outrigger bearing Derek scratchchin Quaife or whatever wont stop that kind of failure its just good ole bearing collapse wink I would draw the offending output flange from the diff to confirm though it could be a cheap fix as the outrigger bearing stays with the output flange on removal even a planetary gear failure wont cause up and down movement as its supported front and rear by bearings if you broke the stub you would have no drive
