Dist cap change HELP!!

Engine bay is full of black and silver.

Dist' cap was blue,so ordered black one and fit

Engine wont start, without putting foot on fast pedal,and when taken off fast pedal cuts out....

Marked up all plugs so went back in right order,holding downs clips are obviously in same place,but may have mistakenly have put new on opposite clip,would that have an effect?

If not any ideas why this has happened.

May be putting the blue back on!!

I believe it only goes on one way, there should be a small notch in the distributor it locates in. Mine was originally on wrong and you could turn the cap a considerable distance either way.

Could you have possibly knocked the timing out in swapping over the caps?

Fires up and runs/sounds like it should.....

Put on one way and the cap was a little loose,so turned through 90 and it felt secure...

Sounds like i need to turn back....

Surely the timing wouldn't change with cap change,as realistically you're swapping like for like.....

Depends if the dizzy clamp is a bit loose - I always used to knock out the timing on my old Mk2 Escort when changing the dizzy cap as the clamp was a bit shagged on that. I don't have a dizzy on my Chim so I don't know whether that's possible here...
