Have read many posts about difficulties with refilling diffs so this may help as it is how I do gearboxes as well.

For me the simplest method of refilling is to place both 1 litre containers on the central heating radiator and leave them there for an hour or two. This thins the oil (and keeps your hands warm on a cold day). Alternatively place them in a bowl of hot water.

Buy one of these hand primer pumps, similar to the one in the link: https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/laser-3813-diesel-...

Fit a suitable length of clear plastic tubing to each end and insert the outlet pipe (arrow on the primer) in the filler hole. Stick the inlet pipe in one of the containers and start squeezing the hand primer. Approx 20 squeezes will push 1 litre into the diff. The GKN holds about 1.5-1.6 litres and you will see the oil overflowing when the level is correct.

Remove the pipe from the diff and fit the bung. Lift the pipe out of the container and turn upside down putting the other end (outlet) in the container. A few squeezes will empty the tubing and the hand primer. Job done with very little mess and even less bad language. cool

This is a handy little pump too, a little awkward to pump under the car if working on your back but very useful.

Ive also used a garden type sprayer for this task with a modified trigger on it, easy to pressurize and stop the flow when needed.

I used a hose pipe ,climbed on to the garage roof and slowly poored it in to a funnel.

Let gravity do the job for you laugh

Assuming the thing has been allowed to drain effectively, isn't the simplest approach for both diff and gearbox to get the fill side of the car well higher than the other and then let gravity and a funnel do the rest with the specced amount of fluid (not sure I'd climb on a garage roof)? The diff can easily be tubed to through the rear wheel-arch and the gear box from the engine bay.... really cannot see the need for pumps etc although I obviously do like more kit in the toybox...

Probably been doing it wrong but it's worked out fine since 2001/2 over 100k miles + smile
