Trip meter doesn't work

R reg 4.5 Chimaera. The speedo and odometer work OK but the trip meter doesn't. Unless I don't know how to use it?
If you push it nothing happens and it can be rotated freely in either direction.
Anyone any ideas?

I have searched through the threads and found where the whole speedo has packed up, but none where it is just the trip meter.

Mine's a bit funny - there is a bit of play in the "stick" and its not always lined up with the mechanism within the speedo.

I usually have to make sure it's lined up when I push it in, and then it works. If I just push on it where it happens to be at any point, it usually fails to reset.

Just gave it a try and no matter how I move the re-set stalk around it still will not work.
It is very loose and easily moves in and out and turns either way without any resistance. I don't know what it should feel like, but I can't think it should be like that, I think something must have broken inside.

Anyone any more ideas or suggestions

Mine stopped a few tankfuls ago so I left it alone and it woke up a few miles down the road.

Don't know how it felt though. I just poked it the once and then left well alone.

Mind you, the wiper park gremlin has come to visit again but he usually doesn't stay long.

don't think that that is going to work somehow. I have had it a few months now and still nothing.........no matter how much I ignore it and leave it alone.

By the way I should have said that it does work.....it just won't reset to zero.

Someone (a few owners back) poked my trip meter button a little too hard methinks, and it's been stuck there ever since!

Razorman, can you live with it as it is? If it's truly farked the only way to have it repaired will mean having the whole dash come out.

Thanks Flintstone I think that I have decided to do just that. Plenty of other, more important things to sort out.
