starter motor power feed route

Just trying to understand what I've read on other posts. I'll be relocating the battery soon and plan to replace the starter feed cable with something more substantial. I have seen pictures of very long cables. The phisical distance between battery and starter motor suggests to me that the feed wire doesn't need to be as long as TVR made it. Where is it currently routed?

It is routed up the side of the chassis, across the bulkhead, through the bulkhead and onto the battery.
Can't see it could be much shorter.

Where do you plan for the battery?

I've seen 7 foot of cable laid out. The route you say wouldn't need that much cable. Perhaps I've miss read it

The battery will be mounted on top of the fuel tank

If you put the battery in the back then make sure you use pretty much the largest gauge of wire you can find as the biggest issue is volt drop. I've bought 50mm2 for mine. Run it straight to the starter. Leave the existing battery cable in place but in the footwell just connect it direct to the 80 amp fuse which in turn supplies the whole fusebox.

Ive also relocated mine to the boot on top of the fuel tank, came out of boot along chassis and direct to starter. Ive gone a bit overboard with 75mm cable but thats what I had on the shelf.

Best to start from the battery.
Main lead = Battery to starter main terminal. Next lead = starter main term to 100 amp fuse. next lead = 100amp fuse to alternator main term.

There is also a lead (two brown wires together) from battery + to the 80amp fuse then from fuse to back of fuse/relay box.

That's some serious copper!

Being a bit more realistic I'd have thought that normally you'd be OK with 50sqmm (345A) - or even 40sqmm (300A) at a push - as you're only cranking for a short time.

75sqmm must have been a biatch to route (and terminate) ...

Oddly I didn't even give it a second thought ... I guess some of us have the oddest things "in stock" just waiting to do something with that we thought we'd hang on to.

When I moved into this flat I found three complete 100m reels of 'good' (£15 - £30 per metre) speaker cable sat "on the shelf" and I bet I still have a few lengths of 1/0 and 2/0 gauge (50 and 70sq mm) still tucked away in there from my car HiFi days.

Racing Landrovers for over 10 years you tend to build up the odd collection of things. Id almost forgotten about the 2 complete spare Rover V8 engines in my other garage Id bought for spares years ago until I had to move something else behind them.
