Ticking from left hand side of engine

Morning,
I've got a ticking sound coming from the left side of my engine, more pronounced when cold but still there when the engine is warm.
I've had a listen under the bonnet and its coming from the area of the rocker cover.
Could this mean my rockers/cams are on their way out or could it be something so simple as needing a new manifold gasket on that side.
I've tried removing the oil filler cap whilst the engines on and the noise hasn't got any louder.
Any thoughts as to the most likely cause would be appreciated as would costs for each of the likely scenarios.

Mine has had exhaust gaskets blow, and the manifolds themselves have also blown at the weld where 4 pipes go into 1. Both of these just sounded like a ticking, not like a blowing exhaust noise at all.
Costs were manifold removal / refitting 2 hrs per side, new manifold gaskets £25 per side, cut and re-weld blowing manifold 1 hr per manifold.
One bit of advice - if you do get the manifold removed, insist on them testing it for leaks, even if they say they can see where the gasket was blowing. I fell foul of this - pay to remove manifold, replace obviously leaking gasket, put it together, find it's still ticking only half as loud, pay for it all to be taken apart again 'cos the garage (NOT my usual garage, for those who know me) had found a fault (blowing gasket) and ASSUMED that was the only problem.
I'm no mechanic, btw, so your ticking could be other things, this is just my experience is all.
