Search function currently disabled, so I'll post this query instead.

I've got a bearing problem.

Forgive the technical ignorance, but my mechanic describes it as this:

The RH rear taper roller bearing for the hub is being destroyed periodically. The last time was only a few months ago. Apparently the bearings are not taking the load correctly, and are being pushed to one side resulting in their being "stripped".

He thinks it looks like there should be some kind of spacer fitted, but isn't sure.

Any suggestions please?

Cheers
J

Taper roller bearings are supposed to have a preload on them. It is what makes them strong and friction free.

Getting the preload right is critical, but you have to know what torque wrench setting to use. The nuts used to put in the preload should be castleated and wired or pinned (not nylock).

If you get the preload wrong, the bearings will kill themselves. If you use a spacer, the spacer will take the preload and not the bearing. This will render it weaker and wear prone.

The only circumstance where a spacer might be appropriate is where the threaded portion of the stub axle is not long enough to allow the force from the nut to bear on the center of the bearing, before bottoming on the threads, and not applying any preload.

If your mechanic was unable to get the right preload before returning it to you, he shouldn't be trading.

The rear bearings need about 300lbft of torque for the preload. The bearing itself is a standard ford cosworth item, and the kit comes with nylock nuts

I'm surprised it comes with nylock nuts. If that's the proper kit, so be it. If it were an aeroplane, it wouldn't be allowed off the ground.

Thanks fellas. I'll pass it on and see how we go (provided I can locate Cosworth bits here Down Under)

Oh I dunno. I used to work in general aviation in Australia. Flew some absolute shockers there

Jeffo, I did mine a few months back, mines a 95 though yours seems to be later, the bearing are from any sierra with rear discs Xr4i cossie etc)£30 with ford employee discount, they only seem to have used one type(SKF)i seem to recall a torque of 280lb/ft, which to me means a 3/4 drive socket and 6ft of scaffold tube.Did your mechy replace the race as well as the rollers?( bit fiddly, requires hub carrier of and in vice). heres a helpful webby
