Erm 'scuse me Julian, in general terms what you says is quite reasonable, then, just out of interest, I went browsing you web site (very nice too!), - but lo and behold what did I see in the top right corner in your classifeids section under "parts for sale"? Secondhand dampers!! just seems a bit paradoxical to be selling these and then suggesting that any self- respecting TVR owner should shun such a proposition!!
"keep your car on the road for a sensible budget" it says £21.00 plus vat etc... Hmmm.
Shouldn't "dalecrx" (sorry no name on your profile) be a customer?....

Yup they are for sale .. I sell them on behalf of customers and give them the money .. it's a kind of part exchange system where there might be non-leaking dampers that come off a car and i sell them on and give the customer the money I get for them. It's as much about the owner of the car with the new dampers fitted keeping his car on the road for sensible money as anything .. he gets money back for his old dampers that would otherwise go in the bin at other dealers/specialists. They are offered with no guarantees as to their suitability for any purpose or longevity, and buying secondhand dampers isn't something I would recommend, but sometimes owners are *very* reluctant to put their hands in their pockets for safety critical new items.

see below ) many owners have lots of money for light upgrades, alloy handbrakes handles, 18 inch wheels, but not for brakes, suspension and proper maintenance.

I still stand by my comment though that if you can't afford new dampers (or any other safety item, first or third party safety I'm talking here too) you shouldn't be running the car ...

) Incidentally I wasnt having a go, I was just reporting what I saw and how it appeared, which seemed a bit ironic. As I said i have no issue with the principle of what you said either.
PS: I was in fact thinking of asking your opinion on some suspension mods, but it looks like you specialise in Cerberas mainly, would you be able to advise? Cheers.

Joolz, you forgot all the engine / chipping upgrades as well, are you being political? I always thought you used to rate handling mods a higher priority than power :-))) Sorry could'nt resist the tease...
In fairness I would have thought most of Joolz 2nd hand dampers are serviceable - ie you can get them rebuilt - which is a very different matter.

once again i would back joolz up on this one although from a slightly different angle dale i would suggest you look at a new pair of shocks.They could save your life or somebody elses if they save you from having an accident. Second hand shocks arent really a good idea if they have come off a car it will be for a good reason. People dont get rid of good stuff unless its been in a crash in which case you REALLY dont want them
Joolz response may seem a bit short but i imagine he has had a long week of people questioning his opinion and spending money on shiny bits as there cars fall apart around them

Not true in the world of upgrades, lots of people just decide they want something "else", doesn't mean there was anything wrong with what they had in the first place. Lots of good stuff gets thrown into a corner of a garage that never sees the light of day again.
As far as the people spending money on the wrong things goes, that one never ceases to amaze me. We once had a customer who brought a 5 series in for speakers/amps etc etc. I jumped in the car to put it in the workshop only to find it had virtually no brakes, nearly putting the car through the back of the office. I rang the guy up and told him - his answer "I can't afford to get them done until I get paid at the end of the month"
Go figure as Joolz says
