Just wondered, I'm with PEART (I've emailed this question to them).

Is your car covered under a fully comp policy with the roof down? Say if I nipped into the petrol station to pay, or into the newsagent to get a paper, would the car be ok with the roof down?

I don't have any inside knowledge but you would've assumed that with microwave sensors that set the alarm off when somebody reaches into the car and central locking and immobilisers that you would be covered.

But this is insurance companies we're talking about so... no.

Any excuse they have not to pay out they're going to use.

But the car isn't like an S2000 were the roof can be put up in 10 seconds.

With the roof down, I think you would be uncovered.

I've always assumed anything locked in the boot and the car itself will be covered. However, if you leave your laptop on the back shelf or the stereo flip front in and they get nicked then they are probably not covered.

Anyway, if the car is nicked you simply say the roof was up and it was locked/alarmed (I assume it is locked/alarmed anyway).

My insurance clearly states that convertibles have to have the hood erected to be covered if left unattended - even in a locked garage overnight. My next policy hunt will factor 'roof down' cover as it's a PITA to re-erect the roof just to put the car in the garage...

Damn, I was just on the phone to them! POD let me know if you get an answer, if you don't I'll ask when sending off my details.

I'm with Elephant, and I know it's not covered when the roof is down. What the difference really is, I've no idea, given that if you really wanted to get in, all it would take is a blunt knife!

But I always lock it when unattended, even when just paying for petrol. It's not worth taking the risk.

PEART just phoned me up this morning, and this is the deal on my policy:

Roof down, not covered:

Car radio
Contents
Laptops phones etc

Roof down, covered

Car against theft
Stuff locked up in the boot (unless excluded in policy document like laptops)

So basically, I can rest easy. I never leave stuff lying around even with the roof up, so I only have the radio to worry about - and to be frank, its very unlikely that would be stolen if parked in a pub car park on a sunny day with people drinking outside etc.

Well, just ring them and double check - I'd hate to think people took what I've said for granted and then suffered. Your policy might be different than mine.

Feck me, a sensible reply from an insurance company!
