Hi chaps.
So.....hot start snag continues. Starter motor. A new one (2kw hi torque) 2k ago...still had snags. So off it went to Colin at tvrssw. Great job, replaced battery and did the jolly old replace the cable to starter. Off it went no problems at All. Haven't driven it much unfortunately but the only twice when I really had to rely on it I got the dreaded "click" followed by some smoke from under the dash presumably coming from starter motor. This was literally 20 mins after trying to re start a really hot ranted engine. I was in a multi story car park and luckily enlisted a person to push. Small movement lift clutch, off she goes. Next time en route to Combe, again 15 mins after hot motorway run...click...smoke...enlist son. Roll back ignition off in reverse. Lift clutch, engine turns. I turn ignition on. Up she fires. No problems from cold..
I don't think I possibly could need ANOTHER starter......does it! What about some heat wrap around the starter. It must be the starter as everything else has been done.
Anyone used heat wrap. I'm tempted to whip the motor off, have a butchers then wrap it to try that...
I STILL can't trust this bloody car 5 years in and spent loads to sort the start out...
Made worse by the fact a 996 is for sale across the road grumpy
Thanks in advance chaps

Before you start the wrapping try running another heavy duty wire from the start solenoid and bring it back into the cockpit. Prepare another heavy wire from the battery positive.

Then, next time it fails to start try starting it with your new wires. If it still won't start then you do have a starter issue. If it does start you have proved that the problem is still in your start circuit.

you like most folk have the wrong end of the stick the wires that need upgrading or simpler stil a relay near the starter are the ones that fire the solenoid on top of the starter thats why you get smoke from under the dash not smoke of the starter use a 30amp at least relay rum a positive direct from the starter feed to one side of the switch contacts on the relay then the other side to the kicker spade on the solenoid then put the original kicker wire on the relay firing terminal the fourth and last is neutral to a good earth on the engine i generally use a sump bolt, no more problems the original trouble is the kicker wiring which is going through the imobilizer alarm etc. is just not big enough when loads are high.

See above, you won't get starter motor smoke in the cabin.

Just done exactly this, dropped the fuse to 10 amps ( still used 30 amp relay) the solenoid shouldn't be using more than 10 amps if in good condition. My solenoid had bad end cap corrosion caused by water / heat low voltage, who knows, and associated with the known immobilser problem.

Once new end cap terminals been replaced it runs fine on a 10 amp fuse, don't forget we are only powering the solenoid which is really a relay in heavy duty form. The change does not affect the big starter cable current.

So now the start position on the ignition switch is still run through the immobiliser but then to the 30amp relay / earth. Just a small current. The relay heavy contacts are wired to the main battery cable for full power and then through the fuse and on to the solenoid
