Fiddling around in the boot, looking at the carpet coming away and how I can fit a magnetic boot release switch, I discovered a small switch behind the carpet just to the left of the number plate.

I can't find any reference to it, and it doesn't do anything obvious, no click or light when switching it, with ignition on (but not engine running).

Any idea from the assembled illuminati as to what it might be for, before I start digging around?

(I did wonder whether it's a boot release switch for someone who's been bundled in the boot prior to sleeping with the fishes, but it doesn't fire the boot solenoid...)

Having replaced my sticky boot solenoid I did't have one of those, looks aftermarket to me?
These Tvr's are a thrill a minute, does it smell musty in there hehe
Gangsters car biglaugh

Can you trace the wiring to anything!
I'd treat your car with great respect if I was you, smile
Does it turn the number plate and rear lights off, just in case of a bad get away hehe

That's mad that is, I can't think why you'd do that, maybe a fuel cut off at the pump as an extra safety device or something.

Old night rally trick that... stopped someone following up close and relying on your brake lights for their braking points! Ah, brought back some happy memories!

Weird place to put an immobiliser switch, could be fuel pump but you might as well have done it from the relay by the fuse board. Tried playing with it with the lights on, looks too close to the tail light loom to be a random placement.

Do the pink coloured crimps with the very thin wiring go to it?

Not someone's attempt in the past to fit a Cerbera style boot opening switch?

I haven't investigated what goes to it, and it's not immediately obvious. I'll do a bit more digging and find out.

It's not a boot release switch, as you can't hear the solenoid fire when pressed. Also it's an on/off switch, not a press-to-switch switch, like the one under the dash (not sure what the proper terminology is)

I'll also try with the engine running / lights on to see if anything happens.

If it turns out to be a fuel pump switch, what are the dangers of testing it while the engine's running?

It certainly seems like it's not any kind of factory fit, that's for sure wink

What's interesting is that it sits under the carpet, so presumably meant to be undetectable f you don't know it's there, but due to it being a rocker switch, easy to switch through the carpet by feel - intriguing...

The dangers are.. Your engine will turn off. Likely a rear brake light circuit kill switch.

I thought as much, thanks smile - Presumably the fuel pump will re-prime the system when it's switched back on, if that is the case? (excuse my ignorance)

Brake light kill switch, for shifty race tactics, as previously suggested? That would be hilarious! Maybe this car's had a previous life as a cross-border rallying smuggler's mule... wink

Back in my driver training days we had rigged a car with some hidden switches down beside the passenger seat, so that we could 'fail' certain instruments to see how long it was before the driver realised he had (for example) no oil pressure or an overheating water temp etc.

Someone, somewhere will have spent years looking at theses switches in a Sierra Cosworth and trying to work out what they did.

I realise this helps you not one bit, sorry.
