Lying on my back peering into the n/s front wheel arch (as you do on a sunny afternoon), spotted a plastic drain pipe protruding about half inch midway up the back of the wheel arch. Any ideas?

A bit they had left over from something lying out in the yard?

Ah yes that'll be the answer - unless you've been driving over any drain pipes recently!!!

(sorry if you're waiting for something serious - I am just getting ready for the hooter to sound. And I won't be doing much peering underneath 'til I get home!!!)

It's the vent pipe from the battery - probably disconnected unless your battery has a connection for it.

So that's why the batteries fail - they fill with rainwater thrown up by the front wheels!
