Ive got to do the manifold gaskets and y pice connections, as I have developed some small leaks that are now making it sound a bit like a tractor.

This appears to be a feared job, any advice so I get it right and dont still end up with a leak.

Also what would anyone recommend as a "suitable exhaust manifold gasket sealant" as in the bible.

It is possible that the leak is on the inside where the 4 primary pipes join the cat.

Later LR twin port steel gaskets have good reports, happy with mine.

Various opinions on what to strip for access, depends on car (inner wings seem to vary + manifold size). Better to strip everything to make access as easy as possible IMHO.

Soak overnight with wd40 may make removal a little easier.

Ref leak on the inside where the 4 primary pipes join the cat, I will chk when I remove the manifolds. I have an oxy/accet set if it needs welding. Cheers.

Any ideas on manifold sealant?

In theory you don't need sealant, but i would use very high temp silicone on the "V" clamp mating surfaces

Just in case you have bolt up flanges dont be confused, gaskets are available (in 3 sizes IIRC, just measure the inside diameter).

Quality advice!

Hopefully my gaskets have lots of life left if them, but if they do go, your site will be the first thing I look at*.

Totally agree i thought that i needed some new gaskets on my Chim 400 i got the job done with new stainless gaskets, when i drove the car after the work, it was worse the manifold was leaking not the gaskets, removing the manifold made the leak more exagerated than before, i eventually had the manifold pressure tested by a engineering company and the leak was coming from the the "primary pipes" as 2sheds has said result new manifold luckierly Douglas valley came to the rescue

Snorky, great write up thanks for posting your notes! I was going to put it on axle stands, you saved me the job. Massey Fergusson was a good description... if I lived in somerset I would blend into the background with the noise mines developed.

I am taking them off Sunday PM after the good weather!!!

no problem, thanks for the kudos, that was the reason I posted the info. You may find that you need a small batten piece of wood to push your spanner round on cylinder 5's bottom bolt but once you crack the seal on the bolts they are fine - remember to copperslip the new ones and go round them about a week later to check they're still tight....make sure to cover the wing with an old bed sheet so you don't scratch it...good luck email me if you get stuck...

Please do note that with early cars it may even be neccessary to remove alternator, alt engine mount and swirl tank. Just because it was easy for one person does'nt mean it will be the same for you..... The inner wings & manifolds have undergone subtle changes I believe. IMHO its better to plan for the worst & be pleased if it works out easier than expected, you only really know when you've tackled the job on your particular car.
